04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Thanks for this interesting article.  My son is a National Guard medical personnel.  He was out in Portland OR until last October, and is now back home here in SW Florida.  Fortunately he has not had to do any of this outside of caring for other National Guard troops during his one weekend a month duty.  

 

I'll ask him what he knows about this and report back.

I entirely disagree with him. And I have to say with my husband dealing with matters involving the National Guard in training them for these civilian medical duties they are working extremely hard to help. That being said, I am dubious about the crash course training they are being given, and am skeptical how fast they are being given nursing certifications.

Having spent 14 years as a National Guard officer I would give the article a c minus.

 

The point of taking them out of the civilian world and is a valid point.

 

Most guardsmen in today's world often do more than 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year.

 

Also not sure sending some personal to duty outside the normal weekend impacts readiness.  Quite the contrary if they are training in their MOS it might actually improve readiness. 

I would also point out many times people volunteer for active duty during times like this and many are from non medical fields are assigned to support like admin at vaccination sites etc
