They didn't do the math in the article, but comparing the operations savings between the Mach e and the Escape Hybrid, the payback period would be close to 8 years, and the Escape S it would be close to 7 years.  Of course this assumes all EV charging is done at home at the lower electricity rate and it also includes the taxpayer helping out the Mach e buyer.  If the charging was done commercially at a DC charger, there would be no advantage for the Mach e over the Escape S, and the Escape Hybrid would actually save money over the Mach e.  In reality, the charging will be done with some sort of mix depending on one's living arrangements (not everyone lives in a single family home with a Level 2 charger), the main point is that EVs are not a one-size solution to anything regardless of what our VeeP or Mayor Pete say.

At the higher rate, charging the entry-level version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E -- which has a starting price of $37,495 after federal tax credits are deducted and a range of 247 miles between charges -- would cost $2,100 annually for 15,000 miles of driving, compared to $1,500 at 31 cents and just $650 in an average home.

 

In contrast, a similarly sized Ford Escape Hybrid that starts at $32,780 and gets 41 mpg needs just $1,550 worth of gas each year to fill up at $4.25 per gallon, and it's $2,100 for a nonhybrid $27,755 Escape S rated at 30 mpg. In California, which has the highest priced gasoline at $5.57 per gallon, those costs would be $2,050 and $2,800.

And all those "green energy" technologies.  Do people realize that one still has to dig into the ground or rely on less than friendly countries to get the base materials for all these great technologies.

Considering this is absurd as no one in the current Administration seems to even acknowledge Tesla, it is still funny.
