Hello everyone. This might not be the best forum for this question but I just wanted to ask.

After several years since the abuses I experienced, I thought about reporting those to the authorities just now which I know is too late. The first abuse happened was in 2016, cops were actually called and they spoke to me but I was too young back then not knowing much so I just told them everything will be ok and I will not be filing any report. The next incident that had the police called again was in 2017 to which I said I again that I will not file a police report. There were more abuses that happened after those but no authorities were called in those times, there was a time in 2019 that he sent me a text message that he will kill me and I was already in the local precinct speaking with an officer but I got scared and decided not to report him.

Is there any way for me to still make a report against him for all those abuses? I know it's been years since those incidents which I really regret not doing anything about them.

Also, if he re-marries and will petition the new spouse to come to the US, will the immigration make it hard for him to file a petition again since I filed a VAWA petition naming him as my abuser?

No, we've been divorced for over a year now.

As far as the divorce is less than two years you still have a chance.

Even if you didn't press charges as far as you called the cops on those two instances go to the police dept and check what is on the report. They might have recorded it because they normally do and it is usually free. You can start from there.

If u still have the text msg where he threatened to kill you, print it you will need it.

It is Sunday, and therefore time for our eminently upvotable Official Weekly VAWA-Thread Joke*:

========================================

FIVE "BOSS" JOKES

The office manager looked toward his assistant, who was playing on his phone.  "Mr. Bright," he said, "I'd like to compliment you on your work -- but when are you going to do any?"

"You can't help admiring our boss."

"Why is that?"

"If you don't... you're fired!"

"Why did Harold leave his job?"

"Illness."

"Anything serious?"

"Yes -- the boss got sick of him."

Angry boss (to office boy):  You're late again this morning!

Office boy:  I overslept.

Boss:  You mean you sleep at home, too?!

Boss (to department head):  How many people work in your office?

Department head:  About half of them, sir.

:P

I keep seeing posts on Reddit from I-485 filers from the same area that I live in having their green card already being produced since last week. A lot of them filed in like 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2021 and they got their green cards now so quickly.

I know VAWA takes time but this has really been frustrating for me that it seems 2020 cases have been forgotten. My VAWA is still pending and my lawyer doesn't allow me to leave the country using my AP, I haven't visited my home for several years and I've had 2 uncles who died just recently which really sucks. I am really feeling that it will take me another 2-3 years from now before I actually get my green card :(

My significant other and I have been really thinking about getting married (I've been living with this person for more than a year now, such a great person with no signs of being abusive at all), withdrawing my VAWA and file again for another marriage-based i485. Does anyone think that this is a good idea? Has anyone here abandoned/withdrawn their VAWA application in order to re-marry & start another AOS application?

what month in 2020 did you apply? And was your i360 approved?

Withdrawing to get married and apply again can be tricky, it’s a double-edged sword so be careful and ask an experienced attorney..

however, if u r talking about a “pending i360” when you say “pending VAWA”, then I’m a 2020 filer and USCIS has literally just started working on January 2020 last month and I just got approved on April 1st 2022. So depending on the month you applied in 2020, be a little patient because they might be working on your case already.

I recommend that you reach out to your Congressperson before attempting to withdraw your application, because when you withdraw the application and things go wrong, there’s no going back after that. So reach out to your congressperson for updates on your vawa (it helps) then discuss the smallest details of the matter of application withdrawal with an experienced attorney.

You can also use Avvo to ask attorneys for free, many immigration attorneys answer immigration questions so quick on that platform

good luck

My lawyer also didn't let me to leave the country whilst my vawa was pending buy I didn't tell him, visited my family for 3 weeks and came back with no problems.
