Bill,

Don't need to have a SS number to get married, despite what some localities may indicate in their wedding license instructions. Such instructions are written for the typical situation of 2 USC's applying for a marriage license.

A K1 woman doesn't have to apply for her SS card befor marriage, but in some SS districts it is a good idea to. Most women will take their husband's surname, and if they wait to apply after marriage their SS office might be one of those few that balks on the ground that marriage has terminated their K status.

Similarly, some SS offices won't accept a name change after marriage because the new name does not match the immigration information in SAVE. But so what? The important thing is to have the card, getting the name changed on the card can be done as much later as may be necessary.

Look for posts on the subject by mdyoung.

Yodrak

Do you have to apply for a SS card / number before you can get married? (I just notice that was the sequence above). Should we apply for an SS number now, and then change the name after we are married?

Bill

Thanks Again Yodrak! :)

Can someone tell me about the vaccination records in packet 3? My fiance does not have her records, but I read that she can have a blood test to determine the immunizations she has already had, if this is done, how does the doctor fill out the record? Just attach a copy of the blood test or what? (We want to get this done because its cheaper in Thailand). Also, I just want to verify that she can go to any doctor provided the form is competed in English, correct?

We were lucky in that my then fiance (now wife) had her vaccination records but I do know that the doctor's office will know how to handle this. You have to go to the approved doctor's which the embassy will provide a list of them to you. Definitely do it all in thailand, it's much easier just to get it out of the way.

I know the medical exam must be done by an approved doctor, but I thought that the vaccination records could be done by any doctor. Can anyone confirm that the vaccination records must be done by 'approved' doctor? Someone said before that any doctor, (she goes to private hospital under her insurance plan), can complete the vaccination records...

hehe, what is Bumrungrat, is that an 'approved' medical facility for the Packet 3 forms? I am confused about this, can she go now and have that done or does it have to be 'current' within some number of days of the application. Is tehre a 'step by step' guide somewhere for Thailand? Also, my fiance has a daugther, does she need to complete each of the packet 3 forms for her daughter seperately as well?

umm.. may be i wrote the name incorrect but it's read like that.. Bumrungrat.. ahaha.. it's an approved hospital in BKK (cheapest one) the other one is B2600 if i still remember... But u'll love Bumrungrat.. it's very efficient and fast.. everybody can speak english (it's a very very expensive hospital for normal Thai people- as it's private) Bram said it's better than US hospital ahahah

I asked him to check his lung as he smoked for a long time - he can choose his doctor from the internet! and all the doctor listed have all the history background and the one Bram went to see used to be a doctor teacher in the US for 14 years so he feels safer

the midical is good for 1 year... so plan your time!! but I did it close to my interview as so in case my AOS is lenghty I can still use the medical but luckyli I dont have to do the medical again for my AOS as it took us only 5 months so my medical from Thialnd still good :)

edit to say : Bumrungrat hospital did alot of medical for US embassy so they know quite well what to do... I dont know about her daughter but I sure think the hospitel know.. They have specific section for this too.. easy easy!

Hi Bill,

No, she cannot go to ANY doctor. The embassy in BKK has a list specific doctors and she MUST go to one of them. The list in included in packet 3, but is also on the embassy website at:

Bill,

You really do need to make use of US embassy web site, most of the K-visa information and forms are there.

The vaccinations can be given by any physician, but your fiancee will need that physician to give her a record that she can take to her visa medical exam. The visa medical forms can only be filled out by the approved physicians.

The child will need everything that the mother needs as may be age appropriate. Read the instructions on the embassy web site.

I know that this is probably not the forum to ask this question, but I will do it anyway.

My wifes aunt who raised her wants to come and visit, but says they will not grant her a visa because she does not have $20,000 in the bank to assure them she will return.

She is married with two children, owns a travel agency and a home. She will be coming alone. What are her chances of getting the visa? Should we even try.

We are going back to Cambodia for a month on the 8th of Nov. I have rented a flat with air conditioning and a frig. Will not go without this time. Mariya's family says "oh it is cool this time of year" I will never believe that one again. Coming from foggy Northern California I melt when I hit that humitity. I hope to enjoy this trip more as my wife now speaks very good english and can keep my from being bambozzled by the market venders. lol

samsbs,

I echo dbirner's question - where did the woman get this information? Many people have the misconception - in my opinion - that money in the bank provides assurance that one will return. It won't. Money in the bank can be withdrawn on the way from picking up the visa to the airport. Consular officer's want to know how much money is in the bank to determine if the person can afford the visit that they are proposing to make. If the person cannot afford the visit, they're not going to issue a visa to make the visit.

You provide nowhere near enough information to make a guess as to whether or not the woman can qualify for a visa. But the chances that she will not get a visa are 100% if she does not apply.

Have a look at 9 FAM 41.31 (Visitors) Notes, N1 through N4. I personally think that N3.1. 3.2, 3.3, and 3.5 are important considerations that most visa applicants probably are not aware of and do not address properly.

Anya: OK I updated it just for you. :P

Thank everyone for the info. I have been telling her but for some reason she thinks that this is true. I will let her know. She also thinks she has to go to Bangkok to get the visa, but according to the embassy she can get it in Phnom Penh.

She has plenty of ties to Cambodia

Husband

2 children

business

car

home

Does she need more.

When we get there I will take her to the embassy and help her apply.

Dan: Mariya and I hope all is going well in your life now.

My MIL applied for and received a visa about 5 months ago. She is a business owner, owns a home in BKK and had previously held a US tourist visa (which had expired quite a while ago). I can't tell you what she has for funds in the bank. About all the information I could get from my wife is that the interview was very fast, she was in and out in abot an hour.

I have previously heard rumors that a "sum of money" in the bank was something that is unofficially required. Perhaps an affidavid of support (I-134) would be helpfull??
