Weird... I typed two post and it grouped them together.

Dan,

Reading your last post is sounds like you two can work it out. If you both stick with it it will get better.

Ty

Dan,

This is exactly why she should watch TV - get some practice, in private where there's nothing to be shy about, listening to American English as it is spoken. The only way to learn is by doing, is she puts off doing she'll pick it up that much more slowly and will be uncomfortable speaking with people for that much longer.

Rodjanaa had a similar problem when she first arrived, and sometimes she still puts on the closed-captioning on the TV so that she can read the text as well as hear the voices.

Yodrak

.... Even though I think her english is ok when she speaks, it is that she can't understand when someone else is speaking. Everyone talks to fast for her which is why she doesn't watch TV. ....

Dan

Mike,

The approved petition still has to go through the NVC to get to the consulate - it will be 3-5 weeks yet before the visa application package goes out.

I'd wait until your fiancee gets the package, to see what new instructions it might contain, before putting out any money for the new scheduling system. Remember, the K visas are processed by the IV unit, not the NIV unit. - the new procedures may not apply, or only parts of it may apply.

Try TNT instead of DHL or FedEx. Much cheaper and same reliable service. I use it every time I ship TO the US and have had no problems...

http://www.tnt.com

It's an Australian company but has been doing express in and out of the US since 1983 and in Australia since 1946

From my earlier post... I can seem to see how to edit a post now.

How can I overnight to Thailand? If anyone has any ideas please let know.

Thanks

The biggest problem here is..She is 29 yrs old and has never been on her own. She is used to sleeping with her mom by her side her entire life. She does not want to go home because of me, but because she misses her mom too much.

Dan

P.S. Where is the darn spell checker :crying:

I think you said it all right there, 29years old and never on her own with her mom by her side. This is ingrained in the Thai culture, both the women AND the men will live at home until they're married and then sometimes even after they're married they'll live with their family (especially if they're Chinese-thai).

Being with a Thai woman takes aloooot of work on both sides and having a phone relationship with you for 2 years only made it harder for her to leave her family. She still had all the emotional support from you but didn't have to deal with the realities of having you with her physically while still having her family relationship as well. She had the best of both worlds in her view and now she's away from what she's gotten so comfortable with.

Get her to use religon as a support mechanism. Bhuddism can help but it only tends to teach suppression of feeling and emotions. This is why Thai people don't talk, they're not supposed to "feel". Also, the educational system here is the reason Thai people have a hard time thinking out of the box. It's hard to get a thai person to even give you their honest opinion about anything because of this! If you're Christian, take her to church. If you're bhuddist but you're christian, take her to a temple to get the emotional support but introduce the idea of a God to her. These things will definitely help you both. It will help YOU be able to live with her and it'll help HER to cope with whatever she's going through mentally.

Thai women are so complex, but simple at the same time. Remember this, YOUR 100% effort is going to be different than HER 100% effort and act accordingly. You're the man of the house, love your wife/fiance as if she were you. You, being the man, are required to take the lead and sometimes (if not always) be more understanding than your wife.

:D Hello All,

I just wanted to report a successful interview in Bangkok on February 2. :D:dance:

Today Meaw and I went to the embassy at 3:00pm and picked up her passport and K-1 visa along with the sealed envelope for US immigration. The interview was a piece of cake. The consular officer's name is Thomas, he was very nice. He asked Meaw only 2 questions: 1)How many times has your fiance come to visit you?, and 2)Where did you meet your fiance? The whole thing took about 2 minutes. The funny part came when he took Meaw's fingerprints. He asked Meaw to place the index finger of her right hand on the fingerprint thingy, no problem. Then he asked for her to do the left index finger. So, Meaw, not being familiar with the process put both her left and right index fingers on the thingy at the same time. After I stopped chuckling I explained that one at a time was what was needed.

On another subject, I don't think it behooves anyone to get to the embassy at 5 or 6 am in the morning. Unless you want to get up really early and spend more time hanging out on Wireless Road. They didn't let anyone in until 7:30am. The order in which you turn in your package in at window 5 does not dictate the interview order, it was completely random. The woman in front of us got lucky and just happened to be the first interview that day. Our interview was the eighth one. Neither she or us was first to turn in our respective packages. They do 17 interviews a day, everyday. We went to the interview with the man who has been helping us throughout the process and is at the embassy several times each week. He says, Thomas(consular officer) does not even start the first interview until 9am. Sure enough, 9:05, first interview. We got to the embassy at about 7:00am, tuned in our package, had our interview and were out of there at 11:00am.

The embassy is no longer accepting walk-ins for interview dates. The forms and checklist must be mailed in and the embassy mails you the interview date. Kind of a bummer. I don't have incredible faith that they can get the mail where it is supposed to go all of the time. Case in point, Meaw now has her visa in hand and we are still waiting for her Packet 3! Good Luck to all.

:D Peace, Evan and Meaw

With regard to Krabi, you may be having a big wedding but you are not getting married. It's an important distinction to make when a K1 visa is involved. Scratch the word 'marriage' and its derivatives from your vocabulary until after you are back in the USA and really have gotten married. And for heaven's sake, no wedding rings going through the POE.

Ken,

Excellent post. I was tempted to comment on the issue, but I could not have stated it aw well or have put it in the full context that you did.

I think that your comments fit Dan's wife quite closely, so at the risk of confusing him I do want to point out to others that while the comments are valid of Thai women as a group, not all Thai women are the same and should not be force-fit into the mold. Rodjanaa, for example, while culturally recognizable as Thai, is quite the opposite of many typically Thai character traits and enjoys the freddom from those traits that she finds in the USA. She has very mixed feelings about our upcoming visit to Thailand and is not looking forward to having to deal with her fellow countrymen again.

Yodrak

Evan,

Congratulations to Maew.

I can't begin to count how many times I read people posting, 'The consular officer didn't even look at what we submitted.' (Usually people who have not been approved at the interview.) Your anecdote about Thomas tells the true story. There's no question in my mind as to what Thomas does between 7:30 and 9:00 each morning.

FYI, Paiwan and I are officially married now. We had our civil ceremony yesterday.

We were able to get multiple copies of our certified marriage certificate afterwards. We just need a couple more things and we will be ready for the AOS/EAD/AP paperwork!
