Tiksman,

If her ID says 'Mrs.' then the consulate is going to be expecting to see a divorce certificate.

Yodrak

I think the Miss and Mrs. Is what they look for if her id says Miss then no problem but if it says Mrs she needs the certificate.

We had a issue a while back where a Thai lady's name was changed but she was never married. They changed it because she had a kid. She did not have a divorce document because she was never married but her id said Mrs. Do you remember that one a few months back?? That is the one I was thinking of .. I was a bit breif in my last statement.

thinking about back in Thailand....... I've never actually heard a guy use "Chan" normally they use their own name or if they are younger than me they will use "Pom" or if they are older they use "Pi" พี่ or Pom - or if they are talking with very best freind they use "Ku" กู which is not polite but they normally use it in their group.

I have a difficult time explaining this to my friends - even for girls - i've never use "chan" - i use "raw" เรา whiich means 'we' but most girls (and sometimes guys too) use it wildly.. i myself use my name and "raw" to indicate myself.. and use "chan" to my close friends only.. not even with my bf (exs)

umm... how complicate thai language is.. and ofcourse.. i fail the thai grammar in school

Anya, when speaking Thai, or hearing Thai, I too am used to people using their name, and the name of the person they are addressing, as opposed to I, Me, or You. When talking with friends or people you are close to, that is the norm. For example, I wouldn't say Pom chop Khun. I would say Robert chop Anya.:P I know the term "raw" as well, but normally never use it, though Chutima does. Once again... my use of "chan" was meant as a means of kidding... not for people who are trying to learn how to speak Thai to use!

Now... if this isn't enough to confuse people... I don't know what is!!! โชคดี

Tiksman,

Yes, I do remember that case, but not the details of exactly why the woman wanted to be known as Mrs and how she accomplished it. An unusual, perhaps unique, case.

That case aside, in Thailand a 'Miss' has never been married (and might possibly be asked to document the fact with a 'certificate of singleness') while a 'Mrs.' either is or has been married (and will certainly be expected to document the fact with either a marriage certificate or a divorce certificate as appropriate to the status and situation).

Yodrak

Some people got the "never married certificate" thing.. I didnt - and had no problem.. But if it's easy for her to get it (from the Am Poer i guess) then one more evident never hurts ^^

Tiksman,

I think the word 'statement' is more appropriate - I don't believe that Thailand has a formal 'certificate', comparable to a marriage or divorce certificate, that is issued for such a situation as some countries do.

Unless there's some reason to think that the consular officer will not believe that Tik has never been married I can think of no reason why she would want to obtain something to that effect. It's rare to hear of someone being asked for something like that in Thailand.

My wife is the one who had MRS. on her passport. It was because she had a kid and wanted to get a visitor visa to Canada. That's what they told her to put, but it was before we ever met. She had to get a STATEMENT from the local amphur saying she was never married and everything was fine after that. She did have to translate it but a certified translation wasn't neccesary. Hope that clears it up for everyone. Also, I just turned in my AOS paperwork so lets hope it doesn't take too long. Wanna see a Thai girl ski???:D

Dennis,

A question in another thread makes me feel compelled to add something here - the popular issue of having a Thai wedding ceremony.

I wrote that "Unless there's some reason to think that the consular officer will not believe that Tik has never been married I can think of no reason why she would want to obtain something to that effect. " Having a wedding ceremony and telling the consular officer about it might be such a reason.

Yodrak
