Hello everyone! My fiance and I are trying to figure out if I am able to marry him in Egypt. How long do I have to stay? What are the rules of marriage over there? Is it better to marry or apply the fiance visa? What should we do? Please we do not even know where to start. We just know that we love each other abd want to be together.

Currently Americans are unable to marry in Egypt. Your only option at the moment is a fiance visa.

Here is a statement off the American consulate website....

This message serves to inform the American community that the Consular Section of the Embassy is currently not providing the affidavit required by the Egyptian Government to authorize the marriage of a foreigner in Egypt.

The Egyptian Ministry of Justice, the authority conducting marriage in Egypt, officially notified the Embassy that it will not accept the Embassy’s form designated for that purpose as it does not fulfill the requirement stated under Egyptian law. The Government of Egypt requests the U.S. Embassy to object or approve the marriage of U.S. citizens. The U.S. government does not have legal authority to neither approve nor object to the marriage of American citizens. We understand that American citizens may be inconvenienced by this problem. The Embassy continues to pursue this with Egyptian officials.

Americans living or traveling in Egypt are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Cairo or through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Egypt.

Ginger Snaps,

Just so you know....this is a long process with plenty of waiting. First, make sure you know your love well, and you are both ready to wait this out. As far as the paperwork required, I contacted my local US Representatives office, and there is a lady there that deals with nothing but immigration issues. She has helped me obtain all the paperwork I needed, and she explained the things I did not understand. But it all takes time and money. Ahmed and I have been in the process of a fiancee visa since June of 2006. He has had his interview in Cairo, and we are waiting the administrative review process. There is a website the government sponsors that details all the information you will need to apply. Try www.uscis.gov and look under fiance visas. You can obtain all the information and costs as well as the forms you need from this site. I hope I pointed you in the right direction.

And, when you file for the fiance visa you have to show proof that you have met your fiance in the past 2 years. So, that would be a good excuse to fly to Egypt! (if you haven't been here already)
