Not a military guy, but when I first saw those photos, they looked like sitting ducks to me!  I never heard them described as tanks; just military convoy which I assumed would be all kinds of vehicles and men.

 

I have no idea of the capabilities of the Ukraine forces, and I know that the Russians have air superiority, and of course they have defensive capabilities in the convoy.  If this non-military guy needed to stop that convoy, I think 4 or 5 A-10s with some supporting fighter jets would make quick work of it!

I think it's a trap, to bait us in, to taunt us. If NATO attacked it, he would launch missiles. And so he knows we won't attack it, so it is to taunt NATO, and intimidate Kyiv, before attacking. Or maybe a decoy, to pull Ukraine fighters north while he gets busy in the south

There is a reason the Air Force did not want to keep the A 10.

 

There is a reason the Ukrainian Air Force, seems some survives, has not gone after it.

 

It would be suicidal.

Due to the nature of the conflict I am not sure what the Air Force would do.  The Ukrainian Air Force to the extent it is left can be dealt with by missiles should it engage.

 

Are there targets they want to bomb? Well they have been undertaking some missions but not exactly a target rich environment.

THE SECURE BENCH

 

A new general was assigned to a new Army base.  After some time there, he realized that two Army men were guarding an empty bench in shifts.

 

He asked his colleagues and his juniors what it was all about.  A colleague said, "I don't know, but it's been a tradition here since I joined 35 years ago."

 

The general, confused as he was, went through the past generals of that base until he found the one who was in charge 35 years previously.  He attempted to find him, and learned that he had retired and lived at the countryside.  He contacted him and requested a meeting.

 

On the day of the meeting, the general asked the retired commander why that bench was guarded around the clock.

 

The commander was shocked.  "So you're telling me that the paint on that bench hasn't dried YET?!"

I am passably familiar with WW2 Eastern Front and with forces of 4 million spread over a wider area the Germans had major problems, back then, a small part of the army was mobile, most was horse drawn so yes the mobile section could race ahead but after a while the bulk of the forces could not catch up allowing large forces to slip out of the cauldrons formed by the mobile forces.

 

I had not appreciated that there had not been a full freeze and wondered why they had attached in traditional mud season,

 

Another WW2 analogy, the Russian forces are dependent on Railroad transportation, no mention of them using Ukraine tracks so they are toed to their rail heads to a certain degree.

 

Perhaps like the Germans in 1941 they were expecting a very quick campaign. And like the Germans had no Plan B.
