Need a new passport but my visa is in my old expiring passport

Hello, everyone.

I'm not gonna bore you with the details except to say that my GB passport runs out in October, my US green card expired in June and I have a temporary I-551 stamp in my soon to expire passport. My N-400 application has stalled and is now forecast to be granted after my GB passport expires.

My dad is back in Northern Ireland and is elderly and - with covid far from over - I want to make sure I can go see him if anything happens, god forbid.

So today I decided to renew my GB passport, but I need to send in my old passport, which has my visa in it, and it would be 11-12 weeks before I got my passport back. In other words, I couldn't fly out to the UK at short notice - or anywhere else - for 11-12 weeks. Or what if I lost my job and had to get a new one? That stamp is my proof that I can legally work/live in the USA.

What to do? Is there any situation where the UK Govt will allow you to retain your old passport and visa while they send you a new one? Anyone had this experience?

Thanks.

R.

Lost passport?

Yeah, thought about that one!!! I mean, I'd never do that open purpose, but it's easy to loose a passport and then have it show up, right?

why not travel now to see sick father and renew your passport in UK?

Ah, now that's a really good idea. I'll look into that.

If I can expedite it over there, that might be doable. If it takes more than a few days, however, my wife would be pi55ed having to manage the kids on her own.

Great idea, though and worth looking into.

Something to keep in mind: For US jobs, all you need is an unrestricted SSA card and a drivers' license. HR/employer can not mandate what sort of employment paperwork you show them as proof that you're authorized to work - so asking for your green card and only accepting that is illegal.

They have loads of interview lots open in Belfast and they'll have your passport to you in a week. This is really doable. Thanks.

There are some one day passport service places in the UK. You would have to make an appointment in advance at a city that would be easiest for you to coordinate. I read a thread from a bloke who did that. His appointment was in the morning. Then he had to knock around the town and go back for the passport in the afternoon.

There’s also an emergency travel document https://www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document

I would not send it off as with covid the post and all that is still not reliable. Also you need to show your old passport as proof to renew it, unless you declared it lost or stolen I believe.

I’d fly to UK, and use the same day passport service or the expedited service.

It costs a bit , but I got my passport in 4hrs in London.

I used the HM passport office behind Victoria train station.
I booked the appointment online.

You will be given back your old one, they just snip the corner off. The visa is still valid in the passport up to its expiry date - So you would present both old and new passports for inspection at the US border.
-  also if you have the green card extension letter , you show that with your expired green card. It works the same way as the temp stamp in your passport.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes for Grandad.
