Hi everyone,

Me and my fiance are working on getting a K1 visa for me, and I was wondering if I have to get vaccinated prior to entering the US.

We read online that I didn't have to get them until AFTER I went to the states.

I called the Embassy here in Japan and they told me I should get them before going in for my interview in Tokyo. I was wondering if there is an official site or page that I could print out to prove that I don't have to get the vaccinations now?

It'll costs about $1,000~$1,500 more if I have the vaccinations done here.

help?

On a K1 visa you don't need to have your vaccinations before you go to the embassy for your interview (you only need a medical exam).

Did you mean that it will cost $1000-1500 if you get your vaccinations done in Japan? That seems super expensive! Usually people here on VJ recommend that you get them done in your home country... but if that is really the cost over there... then I think they are cheaper than in the US. By the way, you only need the MMR, Varicella & TD (done within the last yr) vaccines

Despite the fact that they're not REQUIRED prior to coming to the states, many consulates basically prefer that you do (and suggest as much). London is sort of the same way. It was easier for my fiance to get his from his GP for free instead of waiting until he got here (or having them rip him off for them at the visa medical).

So if you can get them before hand with little trouble (or at a small cost), I would.

Wow, that's expensive. Is there a reason why it's such a high cost, or...?

Seeing as you only need MMR, TD, and chicken pox (or proof thereof) and some consulates suggest that you get it done prior to your entry into the US, I'd suggest seeing if you can get that done before your interview. I know for the Vancouver medical, they wanted immunization records or proof that I'd taken my booster shots prior to the medical exam, or they would've most likely given me the shots in the medical office.

I've never had any vaccinations done before and my insurance doesn't help with shots. They won't refuse me the visa if I don't have the shots done before the interview will they? :(

Vaccinations are NOT required for issuance of a K1 visa. They are required for adjustment of status in the US. If the embassy says you must have them before they will issue this visa, I would print out the following page from the US Department of State and show them the bolded sentences.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_2994.html#Vaccination

Vaccination Requirements

All applicants for immigrant visas are required to have the following vaccinations, if appropriate, for age, medical condition, or medical history:

Mumps

Measles

Rubella

Polio

Tetanus and diptheria toxoids

Pertussis

Influenza type B

Hepatitis B

Varicella

Pneumococcal

As a fiancé(e), you are not required to fulfill this requirement at the time of your medical examination for a fiancé(e) visa. However, you may want to do so. These vaccinations are required when you adjust status following your marriage.

It depends on the Embassy. The best thing to do is go to the Embassy's web site. You will find that the rules vary. Some Embassy's have very good web sites and allow you to download the entire K1 visa package and others don't. Here's a link from the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. Their web site is not as easy to negotiate as others, but I think this link has the information you are looking for.

Keep in mind, for her age group (21 years old, from what I saw on the profile) she only needs to get MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella), TD (Tetanus and Diptheria) and Varicella (chicken pox).

They won't refuse your visa if you don't get the required immunization shots, but they're definitely recommended as you'll need them for Adjustment of Status after marriage. If it's cheaper for you to get them done in the United States, then go that route. :)

It does not depend on the Embassy. See the DOS site information regarding K1 visas and vaccinations. Some embassies may push more than others for vaccinations prior to visa issuance, but it is NOT required.

Rather then just leave you with the link from the Embassy I decided to copy the information and paste it here.

Do I require vaccinations?

If you are applying for an immigrant visa you will be required to have the necessary vaccinations. However, if you are applying for a fiancE(e) visa, Kii or V visa, there is no requirement that you have the vaccinations done before the visa interview. However, at the time you apply for an adjustment of status with US Citizenship and Immigrtion Services from nonimmigrant to conditional or permanent resident, you will be required to meet the vaccination requirement at that time.

Just a quick question. I actually had measles when I was a kid, so do I still need the vaccination? As the MMR can be done in seperate stages (I had the Rubella Vaccination when I was 12, was per every other female in the UK), how likely is it that I'll have to have the full MMR.

Oh, and another, I refused to allow my son to have the MMr vaccination when he was small, due to all the negative press (which has now been discredited). How problematic is this going to be on an ethical standpoint, as I'm still not 100% sure I should allow him to have it?

If you do a blood test with your doctor to show that you're still immune to those specific things, you don't still have to get the immunization done, right?

I mean, if I'm immune, I'm immune! I'm not going to become more immune?!

Yar Liz. I know you can always get a blood test to show the presence of those immunobodies in the blood system (that's what I did to show immunity to chicken pox) or a titres test. With positive blood tests you're automatically waived for those immunizations.

redpixie - I'm sure you can also get the separate measles and mumps vaccination, but as they usually come together it's not an issue if you take the additional rubella as it won't be considered a health risk. On top of that, my doctor told me at the time of my booster shots that when you're immunized as a child the presence of those antibodies in the blood system is quite low after about ten years, so she recommended that I take the booster shot and skip the blood test.

Thanks guys.

I think I should be okay as far as the chicken pox vaccination goes as I had that lovely illness at the ripe old age of 20 (10 years ago). That'll teach me for agreeing to babysit for my cousin! I also have the battle scars to prove it, lol. I'll need to find out about the measles due to the fact that I had the illness 27 years ago. If I need a booster, then so be it.

I'll check out the info about vaccination waivers also, just to see where I'm going to stand so far as to what I will actually need to get done. Half of me is saying get them all done again. It's better to be safe than sorry...I guess.
