Oh yeah, Hicham is big on the whole evil eye thing. Whenever I tell him how strangers stop me to comment on how cute our son is (he is really cute by the way), he'll say "hamza al enak". When I bought a bigger house for us once I found out I was pregnant, Hicham made me be sure to hang the silver plate with the "hamza" hand in the center so that it faces the door. That way, the "evil eye" is kept out of our house!

He's also very superstitious when it comes to rats. He told me that his mother told him if you ever step over a dead rat, it will make you sterile. He's also very superstitious about owls. Haven't figured that out yet.

He's never talked about jinns much though. If something bad happens, he will just say it's the work of "Sha tan" or the devil.

I can't believe no one has brought up the whole "cold" thing? Like if you sleep in air conditioning it will make you sick, or if you go from a hot shower out to a cooler room it will make you sick. This drives me crazy!!!!! Also after I had our son Youssef's sisters insisted that I wear pants at all times and should stay in doors for at least a month otherwise I would get sick and not be able to have any more children (that was ok by me). Also the notion that uhh "doing the deed" causes the man to lose "energy" and so my husband insists on drinking yucky avocado/milk/almond juice afterwards. Also the numerous fruits/vegetables and what they are supposed to do. I'll have to think of some more.

A few my husband has mentioned are the jinns (which i cannot wrap my head around at all), if ur booty is uncovered while you sleep you will have bad dreams, cold to hot = get very sick which is FL is hard not to do! A few food items I have been told on various occasions are "good for men".

I think I have had him explain jinns to me 6 or 7 times now, I cant get why they would ever want to live in our bathrooms. Why cant they build their own alternate homes?

WOM, I just wanted to say that I have always apprectiated your photographs you post on vj. The one of the man in front of the wall, he looks so reflective. Makes me wonder what he is thinking about.

It's cool to hear the superstitions the ME people have, my husband and I have never really discussed anything along these lines. Thanks!

Awwww that is so sweet of you to say ! But this is not one I took myself -- it was taken in Gaza very recently, during the last six weeks. I have collected a lot of pics and find them so powerful, and I love having the opportunity to share them -- as they say, pictures are worth a thousand words.

Yes.... it's the old traditional one for dealing with the jinn. But I've heard it used by quite a few 20- and 30-somethings, as well !
