Well I don't completely agree. I did go to India after 9/11 and stopped at CDG in Paris both ways. People were very nice to us and never felt the need to point out what they thought of our country or the Pres. Europe is not king of the world anyway. They are king in their mind, and the US is king in their own mind too. :P

Did you just transition through Paris or actually stop there for a few days? While I had a refuelling stop @ CDG both ways (JFK-Chennai, return), I don't think I'd want to go through CDG again (due to their  approach of allocations ).

And activists like this will only bring a bad reputation to themselves for being hypocrites, saying one thing and doing another. Not much better than the politicians.

Also - why does reputation matter?

If our leadership does what's right for our country, what do we care what the Europeans think?

But in this case, I'm pretty sure our leadership has not done what's right for our country. That's the real problem. Who cares if the French think Bush talks like a hick? I don't care what they think.

You may not care what they think - but lets not forget that the US is part of a large international community with various diplomatic ties to many countries. If the result of GWB's presidency is that the US will get less cooperation from current and former allies - that's hardly to be celebrated. And hardly nothing.

They also think jogging is yucky and are criticizing their new Pres for doing it, saying it's right wing.

You know, I thought you were being funny so I googled it up and damn.. you're not!!

President Sarkozy has fallen foul of intellectuals and critics who see his passion for jogging as un-French, right-wing and even a ploy to brainwash his citizens.

...

“Is jogging right wing?” wondered Libération, the left-wing newspaper. Alain Finkelkraut, a celebrated philosopher, begged Mr Sarkozy on France 2, the main state television channel, to abandon his “undignified” pursuit. He should take up walking, like Socrates, Arthur Rimbaud, the poet, and other great men, said Mr Finkelkraut.

“Western civilisation, in its best sense, was born with the promenade. Walking is a sensitive, spiritual act. Jogging is management of the body. The jogger says I am in control. It has nothing to do with meditation.”

The French are such freaks.

I heard about it on the news a few days ago and couldn't believe it!

Has that actually happened? Europe has been very cooperative with the US on anti-terrorism intelligence matters. They trade with us more now than ever. Except for refusing to join the party in Iraq (which was their right), what material change do you see?

My mum used to tell me that she "could kill me" for the various naughty things I did as a child. Should I get her locked away for making murderous threats, or accept that its a standard British turn of phrase for being annoyed with someone?

Same here...and I consider my mom a saint in many respects. A commonly exaggerated expression taken completely out of context.

I know what you are saying, but what would be the reaction if say a right wing person said they could just kill Cindy Sheehan (just thinking of a vocal person on the opposite side)? Would that just be an expression?

Ann Coulter has said things like that ...

Likely we'll find out after the next election, but a lot will of course depend on the what direction the current foreign policy will take under the next administration.

Ann Coulter has said things like that ...

This woman made a single throwaway comment one-time at a conference. Ann Coulter makes many comments (on an almost daily basis) via the mass media. I don't see that any of these things are worth focussing that much upon. That said I do believe media commentators like 'AC' represent a general cheapening of political dialog.

Saying you're going to kill someone isn't very peaceful.

Yawn. Didn't we cover this already? Its just a turn of phrase.

It was a pretty poor choice of words for A.) the location, where JFK lost his life in 1963 and where Bush is still rather popular, and B.) a Nobel peace prize winner, who could reasonably be expected to know better.

Still, this is a storm in a teacup.

Very much so. But apparently doesn't stop everyone jumping all over a private citizen who made a single, throwaway comment. But it is perhaps worth pointing out this thread about political correctness. Because of course that's not what this is

Well, it's not like I'm asking for her nobel prize to be taken away.

I don't think anyone feels the need to confront americans to berate the president. They might be thinking it however ;)

You haven't met my German friends :) Or their families. The first time I went to Germany in Feb 06, EVERYONE asked me about Bush and my political views. Now, granted these were friends or friends of friends, not random people on the street. and Bush was visiting at the time. I got it last summer too, from my fiance's family. None of it was malicious, though, just really asking for information.

I didn't even think about that until you said it. I think it was a poor choice of words, not at all meant the way it was taken, but I can see the point especially in light of the JFK assassination. Didn't even cross my mind before! (college American history prof would be so disappointed in me!)
