Hi guys, I recently became a citizen and now I'm thinking about apply for a passport. And I have a few questions about the place of birth on the passport.

1) For naturalized citizens, does it just show the country without the city that you were born in? Or will it show both the city and country in which you were born?

2) What did you write on place of birth on form ds-11 if you were born in a county, not a city.? ( Did you just write the county on there? Or did you write the closest city to the county where you were born?)

3) As for the photo, just need to glue one on the form and that's it? Don't need to provide any more photos then?

4) Would you recommend applying for passport card?

Is there anyone who applied for passport recently and got it? How was your experience?  Any suggestions or advice regarding applying for a passport?

Thanks so much for your help, really really appreciate it!

Congratulations on becoming a citizen!

I became a citizen last November and will do my best to answer your questions:

1) My U.S. passport just shows “Switzerland” for my place of birth; I believe that’s fairly common for citizens born outside of the U.S.

2) I’m not sure what you mean here, but I would write down whatever is on your birth certificate.  If the name is a county name, write that.  If it’s something that’s too small to be called a city, but is its own place, write that.  I was born in a small town and just put down the name of that town the way it is in my birth certificate.

3) For your first U.S. passport, you have to apply in person, which I did at a post office nearby, and they just stapled the picture onto the DS-11.  One picture was enough.

4) I personally did apply for and got a passport card, just because it’s never a bad idea to have an additional ID document.  Also, if you are in a state that is about to implement real ID for driver’s licenses but hasn’t yet, you will be able to fly with your passport card, even if your driver’s license isn’t a real ID yet.

When I applied, I paid extra to expedite, but we had a travel date seven or eight weeks out, and I needed to make sure that my passport would be ready in due time.  Mine was incredibly quick, and from what I hear, it doesn’t really make too much of a difference anymore whether or not you expedite.

I hope that helps.

Good luck with everything, and congrats again - it’s a great feeling, isn’t it :)

Hi! Thank you so much for providing me with all this useful information. Even though it's a bit late, congratulation on becoming a citizen! I'm just happy to be done with all this and the endless waiting.

Thanks for your advice. I will apply for a passport card because it seems to be quite useful.

I think I will expedite just to make sure I will get my NC back as soon as possible.

Thanks again for your help! Really appreciate it!

mine  Birth certificate says Town of ______

and that's what i put on application

US passport says born NY  , USA

Thank you! I always thought that Naturalized citizens would just have the country on their passport, thanks for confirming it.

I kept my other country passport next to me, filled exactly what is there for US Passport application.

Passport Card is more valuable as its not just an ID but its a FEDERAL ID (highest value of Identification across the world), you get it for just thirty bucks. Go for it while filing your US passport.

Same here, my husband's US passport just says "Russia" for place of birth. Even for people born in the US, it just says "STATE, USA." I've never seen a US passport that listed anyone's city of birth.

Highly recommend. It's a useful form of ID in case any others get lost or damaged and it's way easier to carry around than a passport.
