Hi all,

I became a U.S. citizen in late 2020, and did not update yet my status at SSA, as their offices were closed due to the pandemic. I prefer not mailing them any original documents.

I'm currently in Europe until July. I read that SSA offices might open up starting March 30. When I return to the U.S., can I update SSA without asking/getting a new card? My current Social Security card is already without any restriction (got it after receiving my Green Card).

I know it's a trifle matter, but it seems to be simply unnecessary. Thanks.

Social security offices are open to the public. I will stop by in person this coming Friday. Trusting God, I will be able to update my status. I became a US citizen on June 2020. And like you, I was not comfortable with mailing my documents. I will request a new card though.

SSA offices are now open. When updating your info ask the officer to "suppress" printing of the new card. The default process is that a new card is sent to your address of record.

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free... and who will not become a public charge!

Earlier today I went to the Social Security office and the process was super easy and fast. The official was very nice and chatted with me, so I forgot to hand him the form... but he didn't ask for it. He only asked for my passport and Social Security card and typed info into his computer. I told him that since I have a card with no restriction on it, I don't need a new one. He said no problem, and congratulations for becoming a U.S. citizen. And that was it!
