I'm assuming they don't want to go thru shredding the existing card by getting the new one.

I’ve never shredded my SS card. Why shred a duplicate and valid I-9 document?

Why would anyone shred a SS card just because they got a new one

Just giving a reason. People have different intentions. Why would anyone ask for a card they already have?

To update their status in SS records as per the directive from USCIS on the day they took oath.

I didn’t ask for a new card.  I wasn’t given an option.  And yet delivery of the new card was confirmation that SSA recorded my status. And now I can collect SS benefits in most countries of the world without any conditions.

Submitting SS-5 to SSA afte getting citizenship without getting a new card does the exact job as well. Message is being conveyed as if new card is definitely required which is not the case. I was asked if i wanted a new card and i said no.

And the reason you don’t want a new SS card is what?

The reason is that the SSN is very sensitive information. I'm sure that for nearly all people there was no problem with USPS delivery. But a tiny chance does exist that it will fall into the wrong hands. Why take that chance if I already have a perfectly valid card with no restriction?

You can always inform them you only want to update your information and do not wish to be issued with a replacement SSN card, like a couple of others already stated above. Your reason(s) for not wanting a replacement card is(are) yours and yours alone, not sure why some are making a big deal of this.

Most SSNs have been leaked to the public thanks to sloppy work by the credit bureaus and others.

It isn’t a big deal unless the one you have says “not authorized for employment except with DHS approval” or whatever they used to send K visaholders (we have one somewhere)

Which is another reason to get it updated. The main reason.

The SS office has now reopened to the public! I just walked in and got mine updated (finally). I waited in the line outside for a while but once I was let in the process was very quick and pleasant. I specifically asked them not to send me a new card since I already had the unrestricted card. Like others said, you do need to fill out the SS-5 form.

I first tried to use my passport card, but they asked if I had a passport book. I was curious why and they explained that because they just reopened their offices, it's a much more familiar process when using passport books. So I gave them my book and they updated my records. So just a quick reminder, if you're able to walk-in and get this done in person, just bring your passport book for faster processing.
