Update Social Security without asking for a new card?

Hi all,

I became a U.S. citizen in late 2020, and did not update yet my status at SSA, as their offices were closed due to the pandemic. I prefer not mailing them any original documents.

I'm currently in Europe until July. I read that SSA offices might open up starting March 30. When I return to the U.S., can I update SSA without asking/getting a new card? My current Social Security card is already without any restriction (got it after receiving my Green Card).

I know it's a trifle matter, but it seems to be simply unnecessary. Thanks.

No, sorry. You will get a new card.  The firm is SS-5.

Actually, no. Updating didn’t get me a new card. I just brought my naturalization certificate- they copied it and brought it back to me right away. System updated.

At the SS office, you have the option to have the new card issued/delivered or just update the record in the system.

I had it filled out but they just used it to enter details from it in the system and returned it to me. No new SS card showed up.

Did you or did they ask you to fill out the form SS-5?

SS-5 is required. It's to update the record too not just for the card.

SS issues a new card when:

1.  there is  a name change for marriage or divorce (as a woman may be granted to resume maiden name with divorce papers)

2.  when there is a notation saying "valid for work only with DHS authorization"

or

3.  to remove " not valid for work"

you always keep the same #

I still have all 3 of mine with maiden name,  and married name(s)

I should have said some jobs are closed to non citizens and if an employer checks your number and it comes out as non citizen ,  u  may loose  a job offer without knowing why

. When you are hired for a job, your employer can enter your SSN into a U.S. Department of Homeland Security web-based system, E-Verify, to determine your eligibility to work in the United States. If your record has not been updated, this may impact the information your employer receives about your work eligibility

After five minutes all was set and done. I received my new card in few days. I would hope it will be the same process after SSA offices are fully open to the public again.

Thank you, everyone. Great! Good to know there's an option to update the record without having to issue a new card.

And the reason you don’t want a new SS card is what?

I'm assuming they don't want to go thru shredding the existing card by getting the new one.
