I can see the evidence is very scientific.

Lots of wankers and dumbasses everywhere - including Melbourne

I agree

but are you suggesting people elsewhere are as materialistic as someone from LA?

Or into one's looks / image and into celebrities as people are in LA..

It sounds like you have watched too many episodes of The Hills.

Real people from LA aare no more or less materialistic than people anywhere else, it's just that a certain segment of the population happen to have a lot of money.

Every time I think I'd like to teach so I could have summers off I remember my teacher friends's tale of the 10 year old in her class who tried to staple 2 kids together.

Bwahahahahahahahahahha!

You don't really get the summers off though...at least not if you teach upper grades, b/c you have to lesson plan and prepare for the next year. But I do get a good month break (well, I would if I wasn't working two jobs to pay for USCIS fees!) so I'll just shut up now :)

On the USA = America thing....dont most other countries call us "The States"? Or is that just a German thing?

What makes America, America ?:

To me, it means land of the (relatively) free. '57 chevys and '49 panheads. A feeling of pride and a place where you can make it. Yes Pride! This country is far from perfect but it is a good place to live relative to other places I have seen. I have never been ashamed of where I came from or who I am.

Of course my Val would rather us live in Brazil and we plan to move there someday. Her kids like it here though and now would rather not leave the US though at first hated it here. I look forward to living there but know tht there will be sacrifices.

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

LA does not equal all Californians...I am from the North which not only COMPLETELY different, but is chock full of non-whiners. :innocent:

i agree that people in NO CAL are somewhat different from SO CAL...but to call them "non-whiners" is amazing to me. what do you call berkeley and sf??? :blink: hahaha!

america (or united states for nessa ;) ) means capitalism, freedom, diversity (in its people and topography), and amazing beauty.

no country is perfect. i've done a lot of traveling and living abroad and i really think america is one of the greatest places on earth with the greatest opportunities to be who you choose to be!

That whinny type of American which has an infamous reputation overseas and ruins it for everyone else. Strangely enough a lot of those Americans come from CA. Well the ones I have heard people overseas complain about.

How do they know? Do they have a big California Bear flag attached to their person?

People overseas also complain about loud Aussie backpackers too. They need to stop chanting "Aussie Aussie Aussie oy oy oy" on busses because it's totally ruining it for everyone else.

Because they are more than happy to tell everyone about it. Anyone I have spoken to who has traveled to the US absolutely hates LA and the people there. Personally I like it but that city does have a lot of wankers and dumbasses there..

Really? I've not only travelled in LA but have lived there as well and I find it preferable in many respects to New Jersey. I certainly didn't hate it - nor do I associate the people who live there with general standards of behaviour. My wife's entire family live in an LA suburb - and perhaps you'll be surprised to learn that they are not materialistic "wankers and dumbasses".

Well, wankers are everywhere, eh? Not just LA.

I hated LA, but it was more because of traffic than anything else. And I love New Orleans, but plenty of people hate that place :) Even before Katrina they hated it.

I wonder why someone gets irritated to hear USA referred to as "the States"? Doesn't bother me. I think it's cute when my friend says it: "I would like to visit the States soon." I always say "all of them, or just Washington?"

EVERY country likes gossip and talking about celebrities. I guess it's 'cus deep down we all envy those who get to be rich and pretty (even if it's just after surgery or one pound of make up) and not work like crazy and clean our houses, etc.

Depends... America is not only USA... but another countries as well. We have Central America, South America and North America :whistle:

Oh, not this shіt again.

Repeat after me:

America = USA.

Nope!!!!

In other languages America refers to a continent, eventualy precising which area. North, south... But does not define a country

Repeat after me :

America = A continent.
