Read me please. What I wrote. I said the original ethnic population at the time our nation was settled, which would have been American Indians. Did they invite the white man?

Why is it their land to invite us? because they where here first.

As I said before the first people on this continent where actually Europeans who arrived here during the ice age.

I realize this is way off topic, but I beg to differ and would be interested to see some facts backing up this statement. It would fly in the face of evidence that Europeans were not even close when the first peoples made it to what is now North America. perhaps this could be discussed in another thread.

Yes.

I saw a documentary about it on the discovery channel. Quite interesting stuff as it discredited the theory that the first people arrived here from Asia..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

According to Wikipedia

According to the New World migration model which has near-universal support among the scientific community, a migration of humans from Eurasia to the Americas took place via Beringia, a land bridge which formerly connected the two continents across what is now the Bering Strait. The minimum time depth by which this migration had taken place is confirmed at c. 12,000 years ago, with the upper bound (or earliest period) remaining a matter of some unresolved contention.[2] These early Paleoamericans soon spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes.

Of course "Europe" didn't technically exist 12,000 years ago. Nor would those peoples have identified themselves as European or likely have much resembled "European stock".

Once again, few addressed the real point here.

America is the only country that offered solace to many people in difficult times, although not the case currently. That’s why we are here on VJ, no?

America is made up of people from all nations, thus has developed into the strongest on the planet.

Freedom rules, corruption is minimal, as compared to many other equally sized countries.

Do we have problems, of course, bad foreign policy for example. Despite these facts, I am happy to be an American!

Of all the places I have visited and studied, this is definitely the best place to be.

For those that disagree, the "out door" is always open. Feel free to use it...

there are also theories out there (with some interesting evidence to go along with it) that people also came up from what is now South America, long before anyone came down from the Beringia land bridge. I humbly suggest to anyone who is interested in this topic to read "Bones: Discovering the First Americans" -- a very interesting (and not dry!) investigation into the whole "who got here first and when" discussion.

back to topic! ;)

I always hate it when this phrase (or ones eerily similar to it) find their way into the discussion!

The United States has so many good things going for it that get overshadowed by international chest-thumping.

anywho........

What makes America America?

The overarching ideal that no matter what the circumstances, no matter what your situation in life, there is always that hope that the realization of the "American Dream" (definition nebulous as many have differing ideas as to what that exactly is) is just around the corner.

Do a tour or two as a US Diplomat and you will also be "thumping your chest". The garbage talk that I was subjected to would blow your mind.

I feel justified in my last post.

The current goverrnment has damaged the US' reputation beyond the borders of this country. I wonder how many people realise that, or what it means for future diplomatic efforts.

To begin Erekose, why the name change?

I agree with you, in that the current administration has damaged our standing, with respect to diplomatic influence and cooperation. During the Clinton administration, we were very effective in foreign policy, which was apparent in the foreign arena. I no longer serve in that capacity, yet during the first years of the Bush admin, significant yardage was lost.

Aside from our Constitution and all that it entails, what in your opinion makes America, America?

I didnt read all three pages of this thread but to disregard OUR constitution is truly foolish! Ive been to alot of countries! They make laws the same as our's but they are not enforced. Go to Mexico for instance they basically have the same laws as us, do they enforce these laws? Of course not! Lawlessness and disrespect for the law is the norm . We see it all over the world. Our politicians on the LEFT want to save us from ourselves. They preach guilt! With "NO"plan. Lots of you are takin the bait.

Think about it for a sec. Will we have PEACE if we leave Iraq?Hell NO! I HOPE that someday people will realize that FREEDOM is not a RIGHT. It has been earned through the blood of the past.

I get sooo sick of people coming here, taking advantage of what OUR foerefathers WORKED soo so hard to give us! The simple LIFE? IT was EARNED! NOT GIVEN! So to condemn us for what we have, is soooo ridiculous.

If you want to starve,be blown-up or FEEL someone elses pain, GO for it! I certainly don't see any of you VOLUTEERING for the latter.Sure you got lots to say sittin comfortable behind your keyboard. WHO made that POSSIBLE Hmmmm? Not YOU!

You got your ticket? Right! It's so hip to ######, while you take advantage of my garndpa and my Dad's dedication to country? They served with PRIDE and gave soooo much.(my Dad was never around,He was busy fighting just like his father before him) Now that your here, put on the UNIFORM! The uniform of an American! Hide in your HOUSE when the sh!te comes down.

Hope it works out for ya! Will you be lookin for an EXTRA HEART? Prolly NOT!

Umm IT people like me made it possible. We set up the networks, we ran the cables and we monitor the infrastructure 24/7 to make sure that even at this late hour, people like you can post on VJ.
