The dems are a bunch of cowards and are using our military for their own political ends.

I thought that's what Bush et al have been doing since 2003....

Yes, the Dems have certainly been saying that. And then they turn around and do the same thing. Shameful.

I don't think there's much to choose between then, but to be fair however - Bush's lot did have a majority in Senate and Congress back then.

Right, and and the Dems complained about the behavior of that majority. Today, they are ignoring generals just like Bush did and trying to micromanage the war from DC... just like they said Bush did.

If that were true then it sure hasn't worked. Come on Fishdud, you know that this war has never been a political thing for Bush. It is the worst thing he could do politicly. No matter what your opinion of the way the war has been you have to see that it is been something that Bush really believes in. No one can accuse Bush of doing this for political gain that has eyes to see.

I see that Iraq is full of Private Military Contractors. I'm sure the promotion of private interests had no bearing on his reasoning... but 9/11 certainly gave Bush Carte Blanche to do what would have been previously unthinkable ;)

Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 and Al Qaeda, but we keep going round the houses on this topic as though its all exactly the same.

At this point I don't think anyone has their hand on the tiller as far as this "War on Terror" is concerned.

Let me tell you a dirty little secret. The dems have the power to stop the war today. They could defund the war without any sayso from Bush. But they will never do it. You know why? Because they want Bush to end the war. They want to be able to say that Bush pulled the troops out as a way of imbarrising him. The dems are desperate for Bush to end the war before the election. This is because if a dem inherits the war then it will be up to him/her to pull the troops out. When they do that they know Iraq and the ME will implode and they will get the blame. So you know what is going to happen? If the troops are still in Iraq at the close of 2008 the next president will keep them there. He/she will have to and that pisses off the dems. That is why you are getting all these calls for withdrawal. They are trying to force the troops out before the next election so they can blame Bush for what they know will happen next. The dems are a bunch of cowards and are using our military for their own political ends.

I agree that Pelosi and the majority of Dems lacked the guts the pull the funding and that was a disheartening reminder how following one's conviction often gets trumped by electability. However, Gary, Bush is playing the political game himself, hoping that he'll be out of office before any conclusion will be drawn on the war in Iraq. The war is a political hot potato for both parties and it's a 'damned if we do, damned if we don't' situation. If the Dems succeed in getting our troops withdrawn and then catastrophe and chaos takes place in Iraq, they will be blamed for it. Both Congress and Bush need to step up to the plate and do what is right, even if it will essentially be political suicide.

Hey Steven - you made a funny! :P

Let me rephrase that... both the President and Congress need to look at the war from a perspective uninfluenced by political expedience.

I have a way they can do that. Term limits. If they don't have to worry about getting re-elected then more could be done.

Presidents have term limits. This country has a long, grand tradition of "Presidents Behaving Badly".

Bush will go down as one of the worst IMO.

Used to be when Bush said something patently ridiculous it would be trumpeted far and wide (the numerous Bushism books for instance) because it was so outrageously stupid. Thing is he has done it so much over such a long period of time that the standard of the thing (i.e. the office of the President) has fallen. Outside of the US, George W. Bush is a joke, which unfortunately that blows back on the country as a whole. No credibility whatsoever. Makes a mockery of any serious policy issues, and what's more the guy has (even today) a still dedicated following of political luddites and McCarthyist hacks - ready to label everyone a traitor or a terrorist sympathiser.

I think that there should be term limits for any elected official. At least then we only have to put up with them for a limited length of time.
