I tend to agree with you as if you look at the roster for the mens and women Chinese ice hockey teams you will find a great many born in Canada, the US and even Russia.  For some reason they do not receive the same scrutiny as Ms.Gu.

Even the US sports media has become a pack of political activists.

Haha, so you think only capitalists seek money? Delusional much? I must have missed the memo where communist and socialist leaders take a vow of poverty.

Last I checked she's an 18 year old athlete not a communist party leader but hey, make your narrative work for you.

Kapernick and Rapinoe competed in the Olympics for China?  Or, are you implying that Gu took a dump on the US?  Not sure I understand your comparison.

If you don't understand, then you have no one to blame but yourself.  It's not hard to educate oneself with the internet these days.

Well she has an advantage over many other Chinese athletes from other nations who compete for China. She is a beautiful young woman and that makes her highly marketable for both herself and the CCP. Very few of those other athletes you mention are going to be able step away from their sport of choice and be able to grace the cover of a fashion magazine. Her marketability makes her the higher profile, hence the extra scrutiny. Right or wrong, that's just the way it is. Think of her like an NFL quarterback, they are typically the highest profile person on the team and with that get a lot of the rewards but also the blame when things go wrong whether it's their fault or not.

Because nobody ever heard of them before the Olympics and nobody will remember them after. They are not the high profile athlete that she is and they most certainly wont be walking red carpets or signing lucrative deals selling cosmetics and handbags.

Gosh you're so angry, I hope you have a better weekend.

Seems to me like she aligned with the Chinese mother and grandmother who raised and not the American father who chose not to.

Twice you have referenced the father being out of the picture or "choosing not to" raise her. Can you share your source for that information? I would honestly like to see, because I have searched multiple articles about her family and absolutely nowhere does it mention the father abandoning her or being out of the picture. I did see it suggested that the parents may still be together in a couple of articles. We can just as easily speculate it isn't the father that abandoned her as you have suggested, we can suggest she has distanced herself from her father at the suggestion of China because he is caucasian.

See, we can speculate all day long without evidence, it doesn't make it true. But if you have a source for the information that her father has abandoned her I would like to see it. It won't change anything, but I would like to have the whole story if it is available and you seem to be an expert on Miss Gu's family dynamic.

I don’t disagree.  In the end it is all about money and notice.  Most of the foreign born athletes on the hockey teams are past their primes and were mid level at best, but going to China is giving them more glory and presumably money.  I am curious though why the sports media are not hammering these folks like Ms. Gu.  Sure, she is a gold medalist, and has the young beautiful face of an internet influencer, but she is only 18 whereas many of these others are in their 30’s.

Again I think it has more to do with her profile compared to the others. Think of her as the Tom Brady and the other athletes as the back up offensive linemen.

Name one other female freestyle skier without using the google machine.

You actually just compared her to Tom Brady, that is hilarious.

In terms of marketability, but I suspect you already knew what I was saying, you just want to do the faux outrage thing again. Try to keep up, dont be so hateful and xenophobic.😄

Are you always so angry?

Go outside, it's a beautiful day.

BTW, the "the google machine" reference is a bit dated don't you think?

I am always this angry it keeps me thin.  It is beautiful out and I'm sitting outside by the pool enjoying my coffee as I troll the internet. (I wonder what the poor people are doing?)

But if I can ask you to explain your position (I'm really not that bright).  You think she deserves the criticism she is receiving because she is marketable?  Or do you think it's unfair?  Or, some other option?

Interesting comment that I can only presume was in jest. But I suppose the answer is that the truly poor people on this planet are scraping by as best they can, which isn't funny at all and I feel for them. Feel free to "rattle your jewelry" as John Lennon once said.

As for me explaining my position, I suppose it goes to your original post in which you wondered why the media was so concerned with and critical of her. As I have said, it has to do with her profile, her marketability and obviously the media's desire to know every opinion/position/detail about a celebrity. Try to remember, the media gets bonus brownie points when they can cancel someone. I don't believe I ever said she "deserves" the criticism, but I do believe it should be expected the situation. I believe she is trying to play both sides of the fence, and she will only be able to do that for so long because her passport situation is something the media desperately wants to exploit.

Hey did you ever get on the google machine you spoke of and find the evidence that her father abandoned her as you implied? Not saying it's incorrect, but that information was nowhere to be found when I looked for it yesterday. You are far too wealthy and brilliant to have made something like that up. 😉
