Hi everyone,

I am trying to filed I-130 for my parents. I see that I might need to include my parents marriage certificate as an evident to file.

But, they were married long time ago and nobody know where is that marriage certificate.

Can anybody tell me if there is any document I can use as an alternative for marriage certificate.

Thanks.

Are your parents unable to get a marriage certificate from the courthouse?

For some countries, there weren't registries back then. You just married your village hero and thus the journey of husband and wife started. These marriages lasted, unlike nowadays when we have marriage certificates..I think marriage certificates are a curse. 🤣

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Last I checked, in 2021, they cover this in that online I-130. Basically, they tell you how to go around it if marriage certificate isn't available. They know that, they understand that there is some generation whose kids are currently petitioning for them BUT that generation did not have marriage certificates.

Now, that would be a different story if your parent were born in 1980...

What country were they married in?

USCIS will go by what https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country.html says.  This is country specific.  Sometimes specific to a smaller political division within the country. And the rules can vary by the date of the marriage.
