Hi all. I am married to a US citizen and do NOT have a SSN (I applied before marriage and followed all the advice given here but when I called up after waiting weeks they said the form was never sent on their end or something). I am applying for an ITIN but it says I have to attach the application to a tax return - is that my husbands tax return for last year or the one for this upcoming year? Also it seems to request that I send my passport or a "certified copy". I am very reluctant to send my passport as I have no idea how long they will keep and I may need it for upcoming USCIS appointments. Has anyone done this recently and know if I can just send a notarised copy of the passport?

Thanks

It is this year’s return .Tax year 2021. No to notarized.

If you can find an IRS Taxpayers Assistance near you, they can certify your passport and send the certified copy, plus your tax return, and ITIN application off to Austin for you. Get the taxes done first then make an appointment at a TAC if feasible. Make sure they are a certifying center because not all offer that service. You must be there in person, ie your spouse can’t do it for you.
