I don’t have anything to add other than if you do plan to come with your visa, you should do it soon as you can as your soon-to-be ex may be trying to cancel your visa since as you said this appears to be premeditated.

First, my condolences on your situation.

 

Second, finding a shelter should not be a concern immigration-wise.  The trick is finding a good shelter.  Or if you can finance it, get temporary housing until you sort out affairs.

 

It seems you know what you are getting into and have the strength to carry on for what is best for your children.  When you arrive in the US, and your spouse still wants to proceed with the divorce, get yourself a good lawyer.

I would fly to the States as planned then give the POE your relatives address for GC delivery. 

 

Research shelters before you land. Different shelters have different admission procedures as they might not have space for you and 3 children. 

I would also look for a cheap AirBnB options/ extended stay hotels or chat to your relatives about housing one or two of your children.

That’s a tough one. However starting off with three children in a shelter is going to be very rough, traumatizing for the children and I will not recommend it.

 

Dont you have parents, cousins, brothers and sisters  who could look after your children temporarily for about three months while you move to the USA, get a job, rent an apartment and get settled and then the children come over? I mean you can start out in a shelter alone and the children follow?
 

Cases like this make me really appreciate having the kind of large family support system which is the norm where I am originally from.

Sorry this happened, it does sound premeditated and horrible.  Fly to the US as soon as possible because part of his plan may have included notifying the embassy/consulate and asking them to cancel your visa for whatever reason he may have invented.  Once in the US, file for divorce with a good attorney and go after him for custody, alimony, and child support.  And take care of yourself.  Good luck!

Do this.  Go back to Finland to regroup.  Come to USA before 180 days to a residence other than a shelter.

The problem is my sons US passport is expired so we wont be able to leave the US since my ex wont allow me to renew the passport..

This is indeed a mess! What a heartless so and so he is! 
 

Yes you can move straight to a shelter. Arrange for one in advance though. You don’t want to land in the USA in this crippling cold without a place you’re going to straight away. Do you have a credit and rental history etc? If you don’t have those and money, you’re going to be stuck in the shelter way longer than a week.

 

Think this through very well. You might be better off taking the kids temporarily to a shelter in Finland then coming to the USA alone to get organized. America can be a very harsh place without a support network.
