B2 application / US point of contact

Hi all

 

I have an interview in April for a B2 visa. I'm a British citizen but can't apply for the ESTA because I went to North Korea in 2018.

 

Basically I applied for the visa following a romance with an American citizen who I wanted to visit. Therefore I put his address on the application form for where I would stay, and (with his permission) put his details as the point of contact in the US, which I understand may be used to verify my identity.

 

Recently however, things went sour between us so I won't be visiting him after all. But I'd still like to have the visa for future plans even if I don't have any right now, and obviously I've paid the fee, so it seems a waste not to attend the interview.

 

I was just wondering if the above could be an issue and if so what action to take. But my assumption was that they rarely actually bother to contact the person named on the form (though he's not a malicious person, I'm sure he'd co-operate still...)

I would mention that at the start of the interview, with long waits I would assume reasons often change. Should actually help your case.

 

Probably more interested in what you were doing in N Korea.

I don't think it'll be a problem but not having a solid plan or reason to go to the US might not be very convincing. I would at least try to come up with some goal/plan, maybe say what city you want to see and how long you would stay. I would give ballpark dates. The reason is because they don't really want to give out a visa if you never end up using it. You can just be honest and say while you don't have any solid plans right now (after your initial plans fell through), you eventually want to travel to the US within the next few years to visit X city for tourism. Something along those lines.

Yes, I do have a couple of friends in the US so I can mention that, and I genuinely do intend to visit at some point. I understand I need the visa even just to transit the US too without leaving the airport, so that's an added reason.
