Hello everyone,

My husband is attempting to receive aid to attend school in the fall. I want to know if everyone ran into problems collecting financial aid? The school is giving my husband a hard time. What paperwork was required with your application for aid? They are requiring a lot of paperwork and they are giving us the run around. Please share any insights. Thank you

When I was going to school, my parents and I had to fill out a FAFSA...other than that, there was nothing else. I don't know how different it is for an immigrant to obtain student aid and what paperwork is involved. I do know that I always ran in to trouble getting loans. They looked at what my dad had in savings for retirement and said that I was not eligible for a lot of aid. Made no sense to me...like my dad was going to use all his retirement savings to fund my college education...I always seen these kids going to the financial aid office getting huge checks...they would be riding around in new cars etc...I don't know how their parents circumvented the process.

My 19-year old daughter (came here on a K-2 visa and now has a Conditional GC) attends college here in Washington state. She is living with us currently, but when she transfers to the University of Washington, she will either live on-campus or live in nearby housing. I am wondering how she can obtain loans for herself, without us having to foot the bill for her university education, and dental school.

We can neither afford to foot the bill, nor do we want to. She is perfectly willing to get loans if she can, but we are so confused about where to go and how to obtain loans for the total cost of her education.

Anybody got any input?

Thanks,

Rayma

If you want her to get more student aid, then you can no longer claim her as a dependent on your taxes.

You should be able to apply for financial aid even as an immigrant. You may however, be expected to pay out of state tuition rates (Which can sometimes be double) until you have resided in the state for about a year.

Maybe this link will help.

Usually they require copies of income tax returns ( or statements of non-filing)

http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/stu...glish/index.jsp

and their helpline is here:

14. How can I get in touch with someone who can help me with a financial aid question?

If you wish to speak with a person regarding a financial aid question, please call one of the telephone numbers provided below:

Telephone: 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243)

TTY: 1-800-730-8913

Spanish speakers are available (se habla español)

If you are unable to dial the toll-free number from your area, an alternate number is 1-319-337-5665.

Hope this helps!

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Thank you everyone! The school wanted copies of our marriage license, my income tax, and a copy of non-filers form(The school did not tell us this information)! It is crazy because I had to talk to the President of financial aid at the school for assistance!

Which is virtually impossible to do - even if parents are no longer "claiming" on taxes, for financial aid purposes she WILL be considered a dependent. Marriage and turning 25 are the only real ways out - I had to go off my parents' income until I married.

Yes, you are right. Believe me, 4 years in college and every year it was around and around again with these people.
