LOL

These are so funny. I can't wait to get my husband back. Then I will ahve soooo much to add:)

He says "open the light" or "open the tv" a lot. I notice that with arabs and pakistanis/indians alike.

While he has never said "foot fingers" I have heard some of my arab friends say that. I thought that was cute;)

One of the best though.....not done by my husband but while I'm on funny sounding english, I have to say this.

I work in IT so consequently, we deal with a lot of indians. One guy gets on the hone and he's all hyper. Not mean but jsut hyper about what is going on as some computer users can get. And he said "My computer is onning now!" so proudly. I said "WHAT?" And he said "yeah my computer is onning now." LOL It took me a few minutes to realize he was telling me he computetr was turning on:) I told my husband that oe and even he started laughing at it:)

Do any of your SOs say feet or foot fingers instead of toes? Both my ex and Moh say that.

"Fingers of your feet," yes. Maybe Arabic uses the same word for both.

I was thinking more along the lines of expressions though rather than english screw ups, but these are kinda funny.

Okay. If he is trying to do something nice and it backfires (for example, trying to hug me but head-butting me instead), he will say he is like the stork who tries to kiss his son and pokes him in the eye instead.

Ahmed says Moh-stee-kohs as well. And according to him, they much prefer white people and cannot touch him because he "has the brown skin".

There was one evening not too long after he came into the US, and he was crawling into bed with me when he decided he most certainly did not like box fans. I grew up without air conditioning, so I have to have a box fan at night no matter what the temperature. He's not accustomed to the fan and as soon as he positions himself in its path he screams "AAAIIIEEEEE!", he gives the fan a dirty look and grumbles "He gets cold in my @$$".

A few weeks ago when we went to the doctor for a pregnancy test he was getting pretty fidgety and began to covet the swively-squishy stool normally occupied by the doctor or nurse. I told him to go sit in it. "No", he said seriously, "Its only for doctor ###". "Then what's your chair?", I asked. "Its for patient @$$", he told me. "You're not patient @$$", I told him. "Oh this chair is for co-patient @$$", he explained. By the time the doctor arrived, he had finally taken command of the swively chair and had stuffed a plastic cone (of the type used to examining the inner ear, eyes, nose, etc) in each nostril and ear.

heheee. Yeah. Fingers and toes is the same word in Arabic. Just like in Spanish. Maybe in other languages, too.

To distinguish, you can just say fingers of your feet or fingers of your hand.

*in both languages, fingers is commonly understood to mean the fingers on your hand - the toes are secondary, they don't have their own name, therefore it becomes fingers of your foot. *

Also, in Egyptian Arabic, the word for foot and leg is the same. So, like someone said earlier, any part of your leg or foot is called LEG. My knee hurts=My leg hurts, My calf hurts=My leg hurts, My foot hurts=My leg hurts............................................ it can get confusing.

I asked my husband if they had an equivalent to "From your mouth to God's ear" if someone wishes for something good. He recognized it immediately and said yes, it is the same in Arabic. He also said that if someone suggests something negative, the response is, "May a dog lick your mouth."

Turning on the TV, the light, etc:

Jamal told me that in standard Arabic, it is loosely translated in English as causing the TV or the light to work. But he said this phrase is a little awkward to pronounce, so it became shortened in Moroccan Arabic, and gradually the verb for "to cause to work" became the verb "to set on fire" -- when he pronouced them for me, the verbs did sound similar, but I can't write them. Anyway, he says in Moroccan Arabic they essentially "set on fire" the TV and the lights, but he has always said "turn on" in English.

The first time I talked about a guy, he thought I was saying "gay." Under the circumstances, I did need to stop what I was doing and explain carefully since "guy" is used so much here.

Sofyan use to say "open the light" way back in the day, but to say turn on the light in arabic you would use, Ifta il dow, which technically translates to Open....

sofyan has said soooo many things backwards, but its been such a long time, his english is pretty perfect now...I cant remeber one for the life of me

the only funny funny thing that sticks in my head is when he unpacked my bags the first time i went to jordan, i walked out of the shower and he had my tampons in his hand, he was sooooooooooo confused, he thought it was gum or candy or something, when i explained to him what they were, his face turned 8 shades of red, we laughed it off all night tho

Jamal used to giggle if I emphasized the word "always" in a sentence, since apparently the brand name has become a noun there.

This isn't a phrase, but I took a lot of candy for Jamal's nieces and nephew on my visits. Last visit, his little niece was straightening up my room while we were away. She wondered why we hadn't shared the fruit candy that was sitting on the table, and she ate a big handful of it and shared it with Jamal's mom. Later, I wondered how I had blown through my bottle of Tums so quickly. I didn't learn the truth until I returned home, and we laughed so hard. But I'm SO glad I had put the rest of my meds out of reach, and I'll know to do that with the Tums next visit as well.
