At this point in the war, the most pertinent appraisal of the situation I have read likens things to the Western Front in WWI. Movement of the front line is slow and attrition is the name of the game. In that kind of war, a continuing supply of munitions is only useful so long as there is a continuing supply of personnel. I tend to agree with the WWI assessment.  That being said, not really sure how long Ukraine, Europe, and the US are willing to go with this type of stalemate.  Ukraine does not have unlimited fighting forces no matter how much money it gets from the collective "West", and at some point there will be cracks in the EU and NATO which I think are already starting to develop now.  The most likely outcome is another South Ossetia, or Transnistria situation.

One thing for sure is the sanctions have been really hard to enforce. I know for a fact that when a bunch of German and other northern Euro companies left Russia in 2022, some months later Spanish and other competitors came in and totally took over the void they left behind in the market. Many of these companies are really obscure and would never make headlines (hyper niche industry and chemical products) so you'd never hear about it in the news. 

 

Each sanctioning country would probably have to set up a kind of "sanction enforcement task force" and comb over the books of every company in the country. I guess in theory this is possible, but would be expensive, slow and obviously would hurt their local economy.

Not really sure what this entire event is meant to be considering it was Zelenskyy that called it.  The author may be right, this is Zelenskyy's way to get some of those countries off the fence.  Whatever, a lot of geopolitics going on with quite a few totalitarians, so who knows.

Whatever the reason, I am pretty sure that Sarah’s commentary as an official spokesman from the Ukrainian military will do little to bolster the American public’s flagging support for the war in Ukraine.

 

This is profoundly unserious stuff, more worthy of a Saturday Night Live skit than even wartime propaganda. At the beginning of the war I was amazed at how good Zelenskyy was at propaganda–and I mean that as a compliment. Rallying the troops and gaining support from allies was a primary job of his, and he accomplished it with seeming ease.

 

This, though, does not strike me as a masterstroke. Support for the war, which initially was bipartisan, has become more partisan over time, and using a transgender whacko as a means to recruit support for the war effort is unlikely to endear Ukraine to the people least likely to support them already.

Hmm, makes a lot of sense.  So has NATO and by extension, the US been the aggressor here, expanding their territory which is actually the cause of this war?  I know, it is all about Putin and his aim for more land, or the reform the former U.S.S.R. argument, but of course those are ramblings from the Biden friendly Leftist MSM and the neo-cons on the Right.

 

I still wonder what happens when Zelenskyy starts asking for troops since Ukraine is running out of them?

I don’t think the idea that Putin is Hitler is a serious argument. I don’t think that this is primarily a war of conquest. I think the cause, the causes of this war have been known for decades, which mainly has to do with Russian security concerns which the West continuously ignored. We ignored the advice of George Kennan in the 1990s in bringing NATO right up to Russia’s door. He predicted that would be a tragic mistake that would end in hostilities. We ignored the advice of our own ambassador to Moscow in 2008, Bill Burns, who is now the CIA director, who told us that expanding NATO to Ukraine was a red line for the Russians, not just Putin, but the entire Russian elite. It was absolutely a red line for Gorbachev and Yeltsin, as well as various liberal reformers inside of Russia. We ignored the advice of Kissinger and Mearsheimer, Professor Mearsheimer in 2014 who warned us we were headed for this war unless we agree to make Ukraine a neutral country.

And instead, we ignored all of this advice for many years, and we persisted in this crusade to bring Ukraine into NATO and basically turn it into a giant military base on Russia’s most vulnerable border. And not surprisingly, Russia reacted quite negatively to this, as was predicted many times over the years by all the experts I mentioned, including many others.
