Ukraine urges calm, saying Russian invasion not imminent

In Ukraine, however, authorities have sought to project calm.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late Monday that the situation was “under control” and that there is “no reason to panic.”

Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that, as of Monday, that Russia’s armed forces had not formed what he called battle groups, “which would have indicated that tomorrow they would launch an offensive.”

“There are risky scenarios. They’re possible and probable in the future,” Reznikov told Ukraine’s ICTV channel on Monday. “But as of today ... such a threat doesn’t exist.”

I read this earlier, and honestly it really confuses me.

Not surprising, but I do think if anything happens, it will not occur until after the Olympics occur.  I don't think Putin wants to upset Xi, and if you look back in 2014, Crimea did not occur until almost immediately after the Sochi Olympics/Paralympics concluded.  I know, I said earlier that China could move on Taiwan with a bunch of international hostages in the Beijing area, but I really don't think Xi would do that.  Of course that is just speculation.

I can't remember who said it, but I heard something that makes sense. It has been a mild winter, but now the ground is frozen, important for armor, like tanks. And they said Russia and China invests so much in the propaganda of the Olympics and would not want to disrupt that. Olympics end 20 February, I think. And the thaw won't come till mid March. So I agree with this guy, after 20 February and before mid March, if it happens. But sounds like China will also pounce on Taiwan, and Iran will get in the act somehow too, and North Korea is playing with rockets. I think weak Biden has opened the door to a long string of bad things after the Olympics . And did you see, Putin will be a special guest of Xi at the Olympics?

I heard about the Putin visit during the Olympics.  I am still amazed that the IOC chose to award these games to China.  I also agree, these folks seem to be playing Biden, and possibly expect him to follow the same playbook as Obama.  A lot of antagonistic things happening in the world of geopolitics right now.

It seems the west (NATO and the US) just can't resist poking the bear.  The issue is not about Putin rebuilding the Soviet Union, but the threat of a NATO influence in Ukraine, and the missiles that would be placed there.  It's a very real threat to Russia and was made clear some time ago.  Some of us are old enough to remember the Cuban missile crisis and how close it brought us to WW III.  Todays Ukraine crisis is much the same. but just the other way around.  I wonder what the US response would be if Russia were to make a pact with Cuba or Mexico to place military and missiles in those countries.

The only winners in this conflict are the military suppliers, military, and the media.  The US people and US economy will be losers.

Not a plus for the military. While Afghanistan was still going on, my wife had to deal with so many casualties coming here to Germany. Battle field wounded, but things like this cause more than battle wounds. There are wounds from training as well, from accidents, and these things cause there to be a lot of psych patients too, "Charlies" is what she would say they are called. She groaned the other day about if more casualties now from this mess. She said, "We just got over Afghanistan! I wish they would give us a break for awhile!" So, not everyone in the military are exactly eager for more wars, to include those who fight them, and those who have to patch things up.

True, but the winners are the higher ups in the military.

I have an old friend who's adult children are there, in Kiev and in Odessa. He told me that Ukraine is really the birthplace of Russia and the bread basket, due to fertility and the crops grown there? Anyway, his children plan to move west, and see what happens.
