Israel is probably the only government can think of that has true cybersecurity expertise and I wonder what kind of system they use for their tax documents and ID stuff...interestingly, despite being one of the most high tech countries in the world, they still vote with paper ballots. Just some food for thought there.

I was curious about how it is in other countries and found the following:

-in Israel you need to sign up into the government identification system which requires to input info from the biometric ID or passport, phone number and credit card plus security questions (pretty classic process); the app is rated 1.9/5 😅;

-in Denmark, each taxpayer receives a physical card with a fixed number of one use codes that needs to be renewed once the card runs out of them (the card is sent by mail), there have been complaints about the codes not being encrypted and stored in a single server;

-in Mexico you need to go to the tax office with your documents to get an e-signature (a couple of encrypted files); each time you log into your account you must connect the USB; the e-signature must be renewed once it expires.

The process in Mexico and Israel is handled by the government, in Denmark by a private company.

Do you realize the vast gulf between a VA portal and the IRS?  Totally different risks with the data contained therein.

While I have never had any problems with ID.me, I also don't use it to log into anything with what I consider personal data I wish to protect from prying eyes that could hurt me.  And that even includes the VA site; I haven't used ID.me to log in there, either.

From your cheerleading on this thread, I can't help but wonder if you are a shareholder in the ID.me enterprise.

Nope, not a shareholder.  Just trying to inject some facts and common sense into this wildly exaggerated "issue".  Oh, and for the record, I object to your pejorative use of "cheerleading".

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Snail mail?  Everything is online nowadays for me. Got my first 1099 around 23 December.  Talk about on top of things!

That is the problem with this new ID.me scheme for thousands of people like me who live overseas.  We will have to go back to snail mail for things like my SSA 1099 and IRS PIN code.

OK, if you don't want to sign up ... don't.  Don't use the Internet,  rely on paper, phone conversations and personal contact.  Your choice.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens will have to do revert to snail mail.  Many senior citizens, overseas residents like me, etc. It is estimated that 9 million U.S. citizens live outside the country.

And of course, all of those folks who the anti-voter ID gang say are incapable of producing a physical ID to vote.  If they can't produced a physical ID to vote, it would be impossible for them to use ID.me.

So, bottom line is, ID.me is racist, if you define racism loosely like the democrats do.

OMG! An incredible leftist post.  I've participated in VisaJourney for many years.  Please don't try to drive this into politics.  We are here to help people, not to create false issues.  ID.me will work with you to confirm your identity.  Why do you fight this?

ID theft victims receive a special PIN number every year that the IRS sends out via snail mail. There's no other way to get this letter that I'm aware of.

It is available online.  I think you have to opt in.  I got it the past two years in my IRS mailbox.  No more if I have to get ID.me, as I do not qualify.

Funny stuff!  I was mocking the definitions of racist that are thrown out by the left.  E.g., requiring voter id is racist.  And if you really boil it down, using their definition, not mine, ID.me is racist.  If would impact the same people that voter id impacts, if you think the leftist claims are valid.

Drive this into politics?  It is politics.  The IRS is political.  The government handing all of your personal details to a private 3rd party contractor is political.  Privacy is political.

I fight it because of the many concerns brought up.  And for me personally, it seems unlikely that I will be able to use ID.me, as a U.S. citizen living overseas.  I could be wrong but according to the report by PGA on the first page of this topic, it is unlikely.

Yes, I belive you are wrong.  ID.me seems very amenable to working with people to verify identity.  Sigh ...

For the record, millions of cheerleaders would disagree with you.  Not sure why you think you are so much better than them?

Also, though it does not make you wrong when it comes to this move by the IRS, but you seem to be the ONLY person who likes it.

In my opinion that is an insane belief.  This is VisaJourney, not a political forum.
