I hope lawsuits happen. This doesn't seem right, it's an invasion of privacy rather than a protection. Does anyone know if this is something the courts could do anything about or is it more something we should go to senators/reps about?

The webcam thing is also beyond idiotic. Not everyone has a high quality webcam and facial recognition technology has been show to be difficult to make foolproof. Tech dystopia just seems to get worse every day.

The thing that freaks me out the most about the webcam is that you will actually show all your documents to a random stranger that they dare to call a "Trusted Referee" and describe as a trained identity specialist.

 

So even without a breach, someone is having immediate access to the information about lots of people. And they didn't even steal it: the actual individual provided it willingly -and it is on video-.

 

Obviously this is someone's pot of gold.

Maybe the courts?

At least they should give the choice to opt out. 

Right now any new account MUST use IDme, and this summer even old ones will have to sign up.

Don't forget that webcams themselves can be hacked/spied on by 3rd parties, especially if you don't have a super secure internet connection.

Exactly! If the mobile or PC are already compromised, no matter how much IDme encrypts the info, someone can have full access to those webcam calls.

My husband took a cybersecurity class in college, and I'll never forget this one line that sums up why hacking is always going to be a problem: "The internet was not created with security in mind." If we want everything to be connected to everything, we have to sacrifice some element of security for that convenience. It's bizarre to me that so many tech companies seem to have forgotten this simple fact, unless of course they have more nefarious purposes to steal your info for their own goals instead.

They do have nefarious purposes.

And even if some don't, the systems are so flawed and the bad guys are always a step ahead.

So on a quick search I found that lawsuits for similar cases are filed in federal district courts.

There's already a non profit aware of the issue called Surveillance Technology Oversight Project but no lawsuit has been filed yet.

There's also at least one change.org petition against IDme in Florida but it is focused on the delay of verification related to unemployment benefits and it has 0 signatures. 

ACLU has some privacy and surveillance lawsuits but focused on bias in facial recognition and phone surveillance.
