what do you think?

http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/news/...cle_1761103.php

I can see how it must be upsetting, but to have been here illegally for so many years BEFORE they had the child, ignoring orders and thumbing their noses at the law, makes you wonder whether the "anchor" baby is being used as a means to an end. They could and should have left way before the child was even born so although I feel sad they have a sick child, I don't feel any sympathy for their immigration predicament as it's clearly self-inflicted - and one for which the great American taxpayer is paying and will be for the rest of the child's life.

In my opinion, the laws are the laws and they broke the law.

Unfortunate for the child, but surely they could hand over temporary custody if the child staying in the states was the only option for the childs medical care needs. They likely have a friend or family member of some sort that is here legally and can care for the baby. It is not ideal, but they should have gone back to their country when they found out she was pregnant to avoid this. As parents, they should have thought better regarding their circumstances and the penalties involved.

Otherwise, they can do as the immigration officer said and take the child back home with them. It is hard to get mad at immigration officers for doing their job and getting illegal immigrants out of the country.

I have heard so many sad stories of people who have delt with immigration fraud on this forum. People who were tricked into thoughts of love and happy lives, etc... only to find out that when their spouse arrives they flea...

The reality here is that we are quick at heart to feel for the baby because she is innocent and that can easily blind us to the facts, but immigration cannot take into heart any one case over another just because there is a sick baby involved. The laws are the laws and they were warned before this child was born.

I know it sounds cold and I am frowning as I write this, but if anyone is the bad guy here, then it is the parents for not considering the consequences before making their choices unfortunately.

Jeez yes! The current policy of having a child born on US soil and automatically becoming a citizen is one of many things that need to be changed. If both parents are here illegally, that should not automatically qualify the child to be a US citizen. That child should only be the citizen of the country where their illegal parents have originated. It's time to cut the anchoring incentive :ranting:

Here is where the article lost any and all credibility:

But anti-immigration activists say the case argues against the current policy that grants automatic citizenship to everyone born in the United States.

I do not take seriously any report in any medium that refuses to separate lawful immigration from illegal immigration.

I am very much pro immigration and I say that birthright is an issue that needs to be looked at. It's running up a huge bill for the taxpayer.

I see both sides of the coin since I was also an illegal immigrant and now I'm a US citizen. What I don't understand is why people stay illegal for so long, that always baffles me because some have done it for 20+ years. I'll never understand it.

I also saw on CNN last week that one of the reasons, among many others, that the government is not in a hurry to deal with the illegal immigration issue is because for one it would cost millions of dollars to deport every person back to their birth countries. And secondly, and this just shocked me, illegal immigrants paid about $7billion dollars in takes last year so financially it would be a big loss.

All I know is that I'm glad I'm not the one responsible to make a decision on the illegal immigration issue. Phew!

Holy #######!!! did I actually sake takes instead of taxes????

That's just outright shocking!!!

I'm always for humanity so if I have to be an illegal anything anywhere to feed my children and have a better life I'll do it. That's what my parents did for my family and I and I thank them every day for giving me the life they gave me.

To say children, of any variety, are "running up a huge bill for the taxpayer" is downright cold.

So, I suppose that our not funding birth clinics, pre- and post-natal care all around the globe makes us a very cold nation? Newsflash: Most countries do not award citizenship to children born on their soil unless those children are those of lawful residents or citizens of said country. That doesn't make those nations "cold" nations. It's fairly common sense.

No Reinhard, I'm not talking about what happens anywhere else but on our own soil. And I'm not talking about residency either. I'm talking about looking into the face of any child and considering a problem they have as a 'drain' on taxpayers.

Period. End. Nothing Else.

You and I both know there are plenty of other things sucking more resources out of the taxpayer dollar than health care for innocent children.

What's funny, seriously it really cracks me up, is to see how many people complain about the illegal immigration issue day in and day out and don't do anything about it. I'm not referring to just VJers at all, I see it everywhere. It's all blah, blah, blah and most, not all, but most are not doing anything about it.

I feel bad for the people who fight it out on the streets every time there is some kind of rally. They just look so lonely to me even though I give them kudos for fighting for what they believe in, which is the way it should be.
