Any church/baptism records or local department of health records? Cast a wider net regarding schooling - board of education. Also local historical society may have some records, news articles. 
I’d go the FOIA route for father’s INS records just in case there’s something in there.

Thanks for the great ideas, guys.

We're gonna try to find something about the mother through the 1940s census..
I also found out we can get the green card for the son through Registry, since he has been living in the US since before 1972.    I just don't know how long the process would be.  and also if he would qualify even though he is already a citizen...

Good point.  Technically he can’t get a green card as a USA citizen but if DHS concludes he isn’t a citizen, the registry saves him.
