When I was 16 years old (12 years ago..now I feel old), I had a major operation in my abdomen. This morning, I went to the hospital and doctor who operated, they could no longer locate my files thus they can not give me the required medical record and certificate. I have read here somewhere that SLEC will be needing it. Am I in trouble? I'll be taking my med exam this coming Monday & Tuesday. Anyone here with the same experience? Please share.

As I knew....YES...you need that medical records. I have a friend who went for a medical in st. lukes and she was required to bring all her medical operation reports and certificate. Try to call st. lukes in your case.

yes, you must bring your past medical records especially when it is a surgery. the doctor will ask you to totally disrobe during the physical exam and there is no way you can hide the scar. i suggest you call st lukes now and asked for advice on what to do about your lost file and tell them also that it was many years ago. when i had my med exam the doctor even inspected how many holes i have in each ear. i only have one on each anyway. and she recorded everything. it is always good to be prepared.

If it was a major operation and especially since you will have the scars from that OR, it is better to have a medical certificate from the hospital or doctor. Hospital Medical Records should have your records (even if it was more than 10 years ago, since hospitals should keep records of those who were hospitalized, unless records were lost in floods or fire?)... But if they say they no longer have your files, I think your doctor/surgeon can still remember the diagnosis and the operation that was performed on you? Your medical Certificate should have the Diagnosis and Operation perfomed written on it, and not necessarily the whole medical records. Try to go back to your Doctor and ask him about it?

Panel Physicians will ask if you have been hospitalized? When? Where? and Why? And especially for major operations and serious illnesses/diseases, a Medical Certificate "maybe" necessary. You might not need it now (but some Panel Physicians asks for Medical Certificates), but you might need it in the future. So, it is better to have records of your medical history in your files. Good luck.

I have no regrets joining this forum. I always get the best information that I definitely need and those that I never knew I needed. I called my mom yesterday to get my medical records and operation certificate from the hospital where i was operated. As expected, it was no longer there. I made sure that something must be done about it and asked my mom to talk to someone who can be of help. Good thing, my best friend's mom is a doctor and she was a resident of that hospital for a long long time. Now, i have the certificate with me, just in case the doctor will ask for it. Still I'm praying for a good medical result.

Hello Everyone,

I would like to answer my own question.

I and my child had our medical exams just this Monday and Tuesday. Even if I did not have my medical certificate/record of my major operation, it went well. Actually, it was me who opened the subject about my previous operation and about the unavailability of the certificate/record to the doctor. She was nice, and did not give me a hard time. Well, it pays also that I know some info about my operation and the diagnosis. So from there, she wrote the info on my med sheet based on what I say.
