I think the idea is that people are going to wait to have a legal marriage when they have the K-1 therefore not breaching the conditions. However, some people want to have a ceremony for their families who can't be in the same country as the legal wedding so they want to arrange two...

From my perspective, I booked my wedding before we realised how long the process took - by finding a way of having a wedding ceremony that isn't legally binding, we are hoping to negate any need to cancel the K-1 just to start the K-3 process... I am fully aware, as probably are many people, that I have to go through the AOS process following my legal marriage to my OH. But at the end of the day, if I have to cancel my K-1 then AOS is the least of my worries for a long time to come :P

wow! I'm kinda curious how you guys made that happen! our priest is currently filing a serious-hardship-thingy with the chief-priest to hopefully make that happen for us, too. otherways they could only do a "blessing", but not the real wedding ceremony. sucks big time. what church are you at?

we will get to know if we can have the church-wedding at christmas hopefully next week....

It sounds like maybe you are wanting a Catholic wedding? I'm not sure of the requirements for that. My fiance and his mother are handling the ceremony in Germany, but the ceremony will be protestant, so maybe that makes a difference? He just told me that as long as we don't register at the Stamdesamt (is that spelled right?!) first or do a civil ceremony then it is not a legally recognized ceremony in Germany. I emailed the consulate in Frankfurt a while back and asked them too and was told that as long as the ceremony isn't legally recognized in Germany, it's not legally recognized in the US. You have me thinking twice though about the ceremony, so I think I need to make sure they have cleared it with the preacher of the church. I know of a few other couples from Germany on VJ who did the same thing, though, with no problems. Perhaps it has to do with the particular church?

WOW, TAKE A BREATH, REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO DO AOS AFTER YOU MARRY IN THE USA, AND THAT MUST BE AFTER THEY GET HERE WITH THE K-1, IF YOU DO A WEDDING IN YOUR STATE OR IN ANOTHER COUNTRY YOU ARE MARRIED, THEREFORE MARRIED ( NOT THEN K-1) ,YOU COULD END WITH DENIAL OF AOS, THEN THEY WILL HAVE TO RETURN. BE SMART PEOPLE, WAIT, DONT RISK IT

If it's not a legally recognized ceremony in the country in which it takes place it is not legally recognized in the US. I have checked and the conditions of the K1 are not broken at all as long as you are not LEGALLY married when you enter the US, you have the LEGAL ceremony in the US within 90 days, etc. It's more of a religious celebration for the family and friends of the non-USC because in most cases his or her families can't all attend a US wedding.

I think the idea is that people are going to wait to have a legal marriage when they have the K-1 therefore not breaching the conditions. However, some people want to have a ceremony for their families who can't be in the same country as the legal wedding so they want to arrange two...

I agree. I imagine, Jeraly that you can have some kind of a non-legally binding blessing of some sort. I'm sure you guys have checked out all your options and will find something that will satisfy the families without committing immigration fraud! And it could still happen, you know. We have our relgious celebration planned for June in Germany, then a "honeymoon" to Prague, then the courthouse wedding here in the States. We just sent out "Engagement" announcements telling everyone to be on hold and to check our wedding website for updates. There's a chance he won't have his visa by June and therefore won't be able to come back to the states with me then, but at least our friends and families in Europe will be able to celebrate with us. It is such a headache, though.

On the bright side, a friend of mine just got her fiance's approval, and from filing date to visa approval was 8 months total...and he's from Egypt. Cairo seems to have a longer processing time than some of the European countries, so that makes me hopeful. In the end though, we're all at the mercy of the USCIS :(

I agree - it is a bit crummy our lives are in the hands of some other person but I guess that's just the way it has to be...

I'm actually getting married in the US so I am not sure how it all works although I have e-mailed my wedding planner with the idea to see what she suggests to make our wedding non legal :) For all intents and purposes, we will always use our February ceremony as our "official" wedding - it just won't be the legal one :) We'll do that when I get my visa :)

Although like you said - we might get lucky and have the visa in time! But we are cutting it very fine :D

You know - I really have the urge to have a good ol' chat with peeps on here in a chat room with the rest of my bottle of wine and some food that I really shouldn't be eating pre-wedding :D

that's a very beautiful dress! I haven't even thought about the dress yet. The only thing we've organised is our friend performing the ceremony for us. She's a justice of the peace in Arizona so she's going to get a temp license for CA and marry us wherever we decide. To be honest, I dare not plan anything further than that until NOA2 because I feel it would put further pressure on us during the process. I'm pretty glad we didn't fix a date especially with our application being in the situation it is currently.

I hope all of you who have made plans get your visa's well before your wedding date. Good luck!
