Ohh all these lucky people spending so much time with their OH's - I get six more days with mine before I marry him - now there is a scary thought!!!

Debz - I think I like them both although I prefer Orlando in LOTR with the girly hair and pointy ears... but then I always was a bit weird like that... think I read too many fantasy novels :D

I am what is often refered to as a "sci-fi geek" I own a large collection of fantasy novels and DVDs. I often find myself in a world surrounded by dragons, wizards, elves and magic....it's often better than this one! I like aragorn in LOTR, I like my men to look like men....mind you Nick is very legolas (but with a beard). He's got blonde hair most women would kill for...naturally golden and thick with natural highlights...he only needs to condition twice a week, it's super soft....so not fair!!!

Good morning!

Quick question - Jeraly, I see on your countdown that you are getting married in about 4 months. What are you going to do if your K-1 isn't approved by then? My parents and I have already made a TON of wedding plans for April 19 because when we started VSC was taking about 2-3 months to process applications! I will die if I have to wait that long to see my man and even worse, if we lose all the money we put into the wedding... I think I remember reading you have a backup plan - what is it?!

Ok - here is my super backup plan in a nutshell:

If the visa arrives on time - great, all goes ahead according to plan (unlikely)

Out other options, if we don't get the visa in time are:

-Cancel the wedding (bear in mind my family have all booked plane tickets etc and the wedding planning is all but done)

-Cancel the K-1 visa, get married over there, come home and start over on the K-3 journey (waiting another year+)

-Go over on the Visa Waiver Programme, get married "non-legally" (ie without a marriage license and don't sign the register etc), then return home, wait out the rest of the visa process, re-enter the US on the K-1 visa and fill in the paperwork for a "legal" marriage

Essentially we will be having the wedding we wanted and just covering the formalities (ie having the legal wedding on the K-1 visa) later. Of course the only issue there may be is being denied entry into the US but unfortunately that's the chance we have to take :/ Just don't mention anything about a "non-legal" wedding (how suss does that sound?!) and make sure you remove any wedding bands when leaving/re-entering the US until you are "legally" married :)

Wow that is really thought out!! good for you :star: How dumb is it that we can't just get married like normal people!! Before I got to the end of your response, I was going to ask if it would look suss coming over on the VWP after having cancelled a K-1. Would that show up in the computer for immigration officials? I mean, he WOULD probably be able to show ties to his country.... That was going to be our back-up - the VWP - but then move back over to Australia after the wedding (I really don't mind where we live as long as we're together!) - since a spouse visa to AUS takes only 3 months TOTAL (p.s. I hate USCIS)!

Have a great Sunday!!

Yeah - I think the visa to come to the UK is pretty simple by comparison too :)

If you cancel the K-1 visa you can get married in the US on the VWP as long as you are not intending to remain in the country - it's how people get married in the Bahamas and St Lucia and things like that - you might need to apply for a license in good time or fill out some other paperwork as well so I would check into it if you go down that route.

I guess if you cancelled the K-1, bringing proof of ties to your home country would be good - how are the IOs going to know you aren't intending to stay otherwise?! I mean let's face it - it would be tempting!!! Haha!!

3rd December here.

We've decided we need back up plan too as don't know how likely it is that I can be there by 16th April (wedding 3rd may but 17th April last chance to get marriage licence in time)

Basically planning same as Jeraly....go over, have 'vow ceremony' then come back....law firm I work for willing to write me letter saying I'm coming back to work so hopefully that would help immigration, plus will go through dublin which is apparently easier. Once I get K1 then travel back again and go to courthouse to sign paper. Although that will be our 'wedding' in our minds it will be the ceremony. Sucks that we have this added stress.

They say getting married, changing jobs and moving house are the top 3 streesful things a person can go through, half of us on here (the other half are already there and working) are doing all 3 at once plus with the added stress of dealing with the disorganised and understaffed hell that is USCIS (I really pity their ground floor workers, they probably the only ones that truely EARN their paycheck!)

Yay to geeks and sci-fi goodness :D

I go to "roleplay" on Tuesday nights at a friend's house - so many people just don't get it and you have to explain that no, it doesn't involve handcuffs and whipped cream... just dice, paper and pencils...
