So just because you do see how they can do it then you ignore it? It is their stated goal. They are acting on that goal. As a result we are being attacked. Just because you don't think they can achieve that goal is no reason to sit on your hands.

Their realistic threat to the long-term survival of thousands of U.S. citizens is another matter entirely.

I'm not saying we should. Just questioning that given the amorphous and fragmentary nature of the problem - why it is that you think that committing massive amounts of money and getting bogged down for years in a conventional military campaign in Iraq will have a significant effect. I just don't believe you can defeat a pervasive ideology that way.

I don't doubt their capacity to kill and maim - but given some of the comments here I believe that the threat posed to "western civilization" is simply hysterical nonsense.

There are going to be people opposed to us no matter what. But the question is, will those people have the power and resources to act on that opposition. If we can cut off support and in turn money, they wont. But so far, we havn't don't much on that, and instead, pissed off a lot more people who then turn to support the very groups we want to stop. Just perpetuating a cycle. With greater support they will attack the again either here or abroad. Which will fuel more nationalism here to bring more violence to the middle east starting the cycle again, and again and again. We have it much more in our power to stop the cycle of violence than they do.

I was merely commenting on the comic that someone tried to use as a way of making his point. I don't care if Ted Rall makes his filth or not. I just ignore him. But when he makes comics like that then he isn't an American in my view. There is a line and he stomped all over it.

Sure - but I remember you saying in another thread that "political speech was separate and protected". Then again I'm remembering certain other comments made about certain Danish cartoons and the hysterical OTT reaction to those. As I said - I'm not sure I see why a cartoonist drawing controversial political cartoons is really worth the energy to condemn and call the guy a traitor. After all its not like the guy is making up the issues that he is choosing to highlight - his interpretation might be different but ultimately should we be more concerned with the issues themselves or merely the presentation of those issues.

There's laws against being a traitor BTW, and presumably nothing he has done is breaking those laws. He may be a tw@t, however - but there are no laws against that
