So I was having a good day. Then I went to go home at the end of the day and when I got to the Subway station, reached for my wallet to get my pass. It was gone. I went back to my office and tore it up before coming to the conclusion that some jerk pick-pocketed me.

I feel so incredibly violated.

And how do I get a new greencard? What if someone steals my identity?

Oh my God... What an a**hole!!!!!

You need to call all your credit card companies immediately and block your credit cards before this jerk gets a chance to use them. For a green card, you will need to file an I-90 and pay the fee :(

To protect yourself from identity theft, you may want to contact one of the credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on your credit report. No need to contact all three - once you contact one, they will send a request to the other two to place a fraud alert on your file. After they do that, no one will be able to open a new account in your name - lenders will be required to conact you by phone before extending credit in your name.

Also, file a police report.

I'm so sorry it happened to you :( I had my wallet stolen once, thankfully there was nothing in it, except for $5 in cash. And I still felt crappy.

I can remember having a knapsack (which had my wallet containing my driver's licence, all-but-one of my credit cards*** and car and apartment keys) stolen from a club-gym locker in 1996.

The easy part was to cancel the credit cards (I did that--an Amex and a Visa, couple of retail-store), and the difficult part was getting a new licence--at the time, AB licence which I had not swapped-out; the registry-services authorised by Klein after 1994 didn't exactly have any concept of customer-service whatsoever!

At the time, I was on a TN-1 (and not in the habit of carrying around that or passport); I actually had to call a locksmith to open my car doors (an extra key was in my apartment) and make a spare key.

Also a major hassle getting into the apartment (the complex did not consider it an emergency, so I couldn't even sleep in my own bed that night).

IMPORTANT

GO TO YOUR LOCAL PRESCINT NOW

and report your stolen wallet, they will issue you a theft ID number, with that card and the number you can go to apply for ssn and green card again, SAD thing, you might have to pay to have a replacement green card. Call your credit card to report your cards were stolen and at the time you can provide them the police report case number if request. And lastly wait a couple of days after the credit folks been notify check with the credit bureau and inform them just in case if stuff got charge to your cards.

Don't let this incident put you down,

Gone but not Forgotten!

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Definitely call and cancel your credit cards. Also, I recommend looking for it one more time, you may have misplaced it and overlooked it last night when you were frustrated and in a hurry.

Well, I have an InfoPass appointment tomorrow morning to get a temporary stamp in my passport so that I can visit Canada as planned in a few weeks and get back into the US. I filed an I-90 online, so hopefully that will be processed fast. I replaced my license (and changed the #), ordered new credit cards with new numbers and a new bank card with a new number AND my photo on it. Now I just need to replace my wallet, and all my store cards that I had.

No one turned it in yet. :( I really think it was stolen. Thankfully, I cancelled the cards before anyone tried to use them, and I signed up with Equifax and TransUnion to let them know what happened.

Still sucks A LOT, but at least I'm starting to replace things.

Thanks for all the posts, and sympathies.:)

One question though, why on earth would you be carrying the greencard on you?

Isn't that just like the SSN card, something you keep in that drawer/box back at home, and drag out only when absolutely needed?

Technically, immigrants are supposed to carry their original GC on them at all times; in practice, many xerox it, laminate the xerox and carry that instead (leaving the GC at home as you suggest).
