I owe the NVC the visa fees, but I’m stumped as to where I actually go to pay them. Any insight?

CEAC site.

https://ceac.state.gov/IV/Login.aspx

Login and select AOS and/or IV and click "pay selected fees".  Example screen:

That's for immigrant visa fees, not K1 visa fee.

K1 has no NVC fees.  You probably mean the K1 MRV fee paid to the consulate.  For Montreal, start by reading the instructions here (note the "Sign In" link at the top-right corner of the page) -- https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ca/niv/information/fee

Hi Sam,

Paying through CEAC is only for IR1/CR1, not K1 visas. You will need to register your appointment using the consulate's third-party ais.usvisa-info.com site as instructed in the consulate's visa interview invitation e-mail (Packet 4).

Make sure to be in the Immigrant Visa section of the website and choose the "I have received a letter from the consular section with instructions to register or schedule a K visa appointment". Then, viola, the appointment date and time from the consulate's appears. Unfortunately, no where on the site were we prompted to pay the $265 visa fee even though the consulate's Packet 4 email specifically instructs us to pay there! I hope you are able to succeed.

We had several back-and-forth emails with the MRV Visa Support team (email addresses are on the Contact Us section of the website, https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ca/iv/information/contact_us). They zeroed out our account multiple times (DS-160 and case number) and had us try again, we followed their instructions exactly one-by-one. Each time we registered the appointment, it did not prompt us for fee payment. We then tried calling the support number (https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ca/iv/information/contact_us). After the issue escalated to a supervisor, we were finally informed to pay our MRV fee at the consulate on our interview date while they fix the issue.

It is unclear why we were never prompted to pay the fee by the website, but from the looks of it, there are few appointments on our interview date so perhaps that is the reason. My fiancé is not Canadian and is in Canada on a work visa so this requires a few more back-in-forth steps before Packet 3 and Packet 4 that most other cases apparently did not need. Based on a search of timelines in VJ, we are among the K-1 cases that took the longest in Canada.

HTH,

Damian

Thank you Damian!

Last question: did you need you fiance(e)s birth certificate as well or just your own?

Hi Sam,

You're welcome! For the beneficiary, you need an original birth certificate and a photocopy. For the US sponsor, a (preferably color) photocopy of any of the following to prove US citizenship:

  • the passport information page of the fiance's US passport
  • US birth certificate
  • US certificate of naturalization

This is what they call "Proof of U.S. petitioner status in USA" in the Packet 4 checklist (see page 7 here: https://ca.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/27/2016/03/Packet4-MTL.pdf).

You will also need to prove the US petitioner's US domicile. Personally, I provided a photocopy of my apartment lease and a photocopy of my Oakland CA voter registration.

Damian

Take a look at page 7 on https://ca.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/27/2016/03/Packet4-MTL.pdf. From my understanding, consulates are allowed to impose further requirements. For example, US Consulate Montreal requires medicals to certify vaccination requirements are met before a K-1 visa can be issued.

How did your interview go? Were you able to pay your MRV fee at the consulate?

I just thought I'd update for those following this thread that my fiancé able to pay the MRV fee at the consulate in Montreal. He brought a printout of a screenshot of the MRV fee payment website showing that no payment was required. During the interview, the consular staff opened the cashier window for him and a few others. Payments are cash only. If you're paying in Canadian dollars, bring an extra C$20-$40 to account for slight currency fluctuations.
