I’ve been reading through forums and I’m still not clear on what to submit for the I846.  I will have a joint sponsor. I’m currently not working.  I know we both submit the same information but this tax talk is confusing me. so the question I have is
1. Do we both submit 3 years of transcripts along with a current W2

or do we submit current  year W2 along with paystubs?
2. What’s the most effective way?

Read page 8 of the I-864 instructions: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-864instr.pdf

You are only required to add supporting tax documentation for the most recent tax year. However, if you believe it will help your case to provide this documentation for the last 3 years, you can choose to do that.

You can either send the IRS transcript, or a copy of the tax return. If you send a copy of the return, you have to include a copy of each W-2 and Form 1099 related to that return. Transcripts are usually easier and better, and W-2s are not required if you send transcripts.

Paystubs and employment letters are not strictly required; however, you can include 6 months of pay stubs and an employment letter if you believe this will help you to prove your ability to maintain sufficient income.

The most effective way depends on your circumstances. For example, many people include 3 years of tax transcripts to show years of stable income, but my husband and I only included the most recent year because his income was lower in previous years. Adding those previous years would not help our case in any way, so including them seemed unnecessary for us.

This really helps a lot. I see so many different scenarios that it starts to get a bit confusing. This is one of the few comments that actually gives a “clear” understanding of the whole I 846 documents.Thank you for this explanation.

Please note that the clear understanding came from the "instructions".  Start by become an A-Student of the I-864 instructions.  THEN, you'll know what you don't know.
