Hi everyone,

I need your help. My N400 interview is already scheduled next week on the 18th and I'm kind of stressed and paranoid about it now that I am getting closer to the date.

I have filed N400 under the 5 year rule since my ex and I got divorced. We got married back in August 2016 so 4 years. Before the divorce, around 2019 I moved out of state because of work but travelled back and forth. The goal was that eventually we would both move to the new state. We were having conflicts which got worse and worse. Then, I later found out, she was seeing someone else behind my back. This initiated the divorce which was filed on June 2020 and was finalized on Nov 2020. We have everything separate since then and some stuff were purposefully erased to move on. It was heart breaking because I did love her. After the divorce, I decided to better myself. I moved out of state and was able to get into a nursing program and I am finally graduating next month.

Being said, the documents that I have prepared so far are the documents were on USCIS' letter:

- tax documents

- my green card

- my passport (current and old one used upon entry to the US)

- certified copy of marriage certificate

- copy of dissolution of marriage

Now, will they scrutinize my application during the interview given my situation? I no longer have any proofs of anything joint-related except those that I have already originally sent for ROC as we have now our separate lives. I'm worried that a part of my situation would be misinterpreted or that I don't answer the right question and get miscommunicated? Do I still have to take with me documents to prove bona fides? I think I'm starting to get way into my head.

Any tips or advices would be much appreciated

I believe you worry for no reason. Like you said, you’ve already proven that your marriage was bona fide. While backgrounds are looked at again when LPRs file for naturalization, yours doesn’t strike me as anything out of the ordinary. Relationships sometimes don’t hold, as sad as it is. And since you apply under the 5 year rule, you wouldn’t have to prove anything about your relationship, even if you were still married.
Good luck with the interview and congrats on the finish line of your immigration journey.

Hi,

Actually, the USCIS office called me on the day of my interview to tell me that they have a building issue and will have to reschedule everyone’s interview. I confirmed through the USCIS website and it does say that their Phoenix office had to close due to facility issues.

They said they’re sending me a letter in the mail to reschedule within the next 2 weeks or month. So now, I have to wait again. It does give me time to get more certified copies of my documents like my divorce decree.

I will keep you guys posted!

Hey everyone,

I just got an update.. My interview has been rescheduled to February 25. Another month of waiting 😆 Oh well, this gives me time to focus on my studies for now as I will be graduating on Feb 18th… then, I’ll just restudy for the citizenship interview. No reason to stress about it for now.

Hey Everyone!

Update:

I finally had my interview today without it getting cancelled! hahaha I passed it and an now just waiting in the USCIS waiting area to be called for the Oath Taking.

Wohoo! But dang, it was a good thing I was prepared to answer the officer’s questions. I was asked a lot of questions about my marriage and divorce:

When and how did I met my ex wife. How did we end up getting married. How long we were married. Why we divorced. How long were we living together and were separated. If were still married when we filed for my ROC. And she was going back and forth with her computer and my paper stack of documents which I submitted from way back during the AOS process which were already sitting on her desk.

But it wasn’t bad actually. I feel like I was overthinking of how they were going to treat me. As long as you have the answers to their questions, I think it went well and the officer wasn’t rude or anything. She was just doing her job. So, I managed to stay calm.

By the way, she did ask for my certified divorce decree! It was a good thing that my original interview schedule was postponed because that gave me time to request for a certified copy of my divorce decree. God knew and it all worked out.

I was then asked all the Yes or No questions. I was tested for the civics part:

What is an amendment?

What is the Constitution?

What is the capital of the US?

Who is the Speaker of the House?

What are three of the 13 original colonies?

Who makes the federal laws?

I was asked to read a sentence on a tablet and asked to write an answer.

After more questionings here and there, she took a photo of me and made me check my info on a tablet and made sure all my info were correct.

And then, I was told congratulations. I just need to wait in the waiting room again to be called for the Oath Ceremony.

And here I am, typing this out.. waiting Lol But, I’m so glad I passed. It has indeed been a journey everyone! God is good! 😊
