Hey there,

We finally got married on the 7th and now I have to start the whole AOS procedure. So I have a few questions of course.

When do I make an appt to see a civil surgeon in the USA? I had my big medical done in Canada in April and I did call my local Civil Surgeon and they want to charge an arm and leg to see me and then do the transfer, so of course I'm hoping I can at least put that one off for a bit.

How about social security...? I talked to them today and they said I had to have my work permit! I explained I was a K1 visa holder and blah blah blah....he told me he did not know what that was and that when I had all the proper docs I could come in and see them...isn't the K1 enough?

How/where/when can I start using my "new" last name?

OK, that is all I can think of for now!!!

Thanks for your help

You may have to call around to a few civil surgeons in your area to find one that will be willing to do only the Vaccination Supplement for your AOS. A lot of civil surgeons want to do the full medical exam again, and that is not necessary in your case if you had your medical done in April in Canada. We were charged $35.00 for our civil surgeon to transfer the information from the Vaccination Worksheet (from the medical in Canada which we were given a copy of) onto the Vaccination Supplement (to send with your AOS application).

The Vaccination Supplement is needed when you send in your AOS application or you will get an RFE for it.

You are allowed to get a SSN as long as your I-94 is still valid for 14 days when you apply (someone correct me if I'm wrong with this time frame). You will get a SSN card that says something about not being work authorized. You will be able to have that notation removed once you either get your EAD or your GC. K-1's are entitled to get a SSN. Ask to speak to a supervisor if you are told otherwise again.

You can start using your married name right after you are married. Just make sure you change your name at your bank, employer, credit cards, etc. Take your certified marriage certificate with you to the SSA office to show your new name.

Good luck.
