Heck, just recently I80 was closed near Lake Tahoe, I wonder how many EVs were in the traffic.  EVs have a purpose, but they have limitations (I understand that towing with an EV Ford Lightening reduces the range 60-70%).  EVs are also not emission free.  Current vehicles are regulated for both tailpipe emissions and evaporative emissions, evaporative emissions come from moe than just the fuel in a vehicle, the rubbers, plastics, fabrics, etc. emit hydrocarbons that contribute to emissions.  At some point, the California Air Resources Board will be putting an EV in an emissions SHED to see how many HCs are coming from all those lightweight materials and plastics used in EVs.  Lastly, whenever I see a story promoting EVs, I never see a comparison of the payback period for an EV to a comparably equipped ICE.  I recently did the math for us and yes, EVs are less money to operate annually, but the $15k price difference led to a payback period of more than 13 years if we were to buy an EV.

Anyway in hurricanes gasoline supplies run out.  Supplies of everything run out.  Even water despite the stuff dripping like manna from sky.  
 

So yes electricity will run out and some travelers who didn’t charge their EVs the night before the evacuation will be stuck. And die.  
 

  Just like anyone who didn’t fill up before the hurricane is stuck and will die.  
 

I was stuck once after an earthquake because while there was plenty of fuel, “out of an abundance of caution” all gas stations were closed.
 

Miraculously thousands of gas stations were “inspected” 24 hours later.  

 

Electric cars are perfectly sensible for the sunbelt, and the west coast (up to the Alaska panhandle) where it rarely freezes. 
 

Electric cars are impractical elsewhere and people will figure it out.  You can’t fight the laws of physics.  Already in the EU, methane is being rebranded as green and moving toward methane power makes a lot of sense.  The apocalypse depicted in the link would work if it was upstate New York in blizzard.

Range doesn't mean much when you are stuck in snow.  I wonder how long the typical EV can keep someone warm?

To be fair, an ICE vehicle will run out of fuel eventually too if stuck long enough.  Most EVs use a 1-2 kW heater if run full out, but they also have a thermal management system for the battery that also consumes power.  So for comparison, if you have an ICE vehicle with a 78 L fuel tank, you can idle the engine for about 39 hrs assuming the tank is full (an idling engine uses about 2 L per hour of fuel), an EV with a 60 kW-her battery will run a fully charged battery down in about 30 hrs just from the heater, but of course there are other electrical loads as well.

i have a 4 wheel drive truck and even i pay attention to weather reports and plan accordingly.

We can get the highway closed so coming back in the winter I always make sure i fill up my tank.

 

I could see if you have an integrated car/house system you could use the car as a back up.
