I received the passport on December 24 2021 (after 2 weeks from sending the application)

The passport has a typo and I suppose I need to send it back to them to correct with the cert.
I still haven’t gotten the cert yet.

So certainly it took more than 2 weeks. I’m hoping to get it asap so I can go to SSA office and DMV to update my last name change.

I think it would have been more prudent to maybe have gone to the SSA first to get a new card with your new name and from there immediately to the DMV to get your license renewed and updated. After the DMV right to the post office to apply for the passport. What proof did you show on your passport application that your name has changed? (I assume it was on your naturalization certificate).  This is the procedure I followed and it worked really well. I wanted to make sure that my name change was recorded immediately because the issuing of the passport takes anywhere from 6 to 11 weeks.  Best...

PS. With all of the above mentioned institutions an appointment is required due to Covid.  It calls for a lot of organizing, especially here in Florida.

You are correct, however, in my oath ceremony, the USCIS staff told me to apply for passport today, and I can do the name change process 2 weeks later at SSA office. Because they have to update them on their end. What you said would've made more sense if I had done it and I didn't know.

There was a paper clipped to my certificate, and I had to sent both of them together. But the paper didn't seem to be original one, it looked like a copy. My certificate had my new name on it. If the passport didn't come with error, I could have done all of this now. It came in 2 weeks, so no problem with the passport. I'm not sure why they haven't sent the cert back yet.

So now I'm waiting and waiting... what a waste of time....

Understable!  Hope your wait isn't too long given all the time you have devoted in becoming a citizen:-)

Happy to report my naturalization cert was in my UPS mailbox!

Great!
Would you mind sharing how it came?
Did you get a tracking number (sometimes you get a txt message) or pic of the mail via informed delivery?
Also did it come in a regular envelope?

Thanks.

Hi. I hope you still read this thread. I'm also in Chicago. Did you end up getting your certificate back?

Less than a month for me.

Some never get theirs back.

Short of a security clearance or petitioning an alien for immigration you likely won’t need it again

Hopefully you made a copy and also ordered a passport card.

This is a brain dead process.

Lately I’m reading of incidents where more and more bureaucrats at DMVs and SSA are requiring naturalization certificates, certificates of citizenships, or CRBAs from US citizens who weren’t born in the USA.  The end is nigh for passports being considered evidence of citizenship.

Anyone reading this might consider alternative ways to get a passport while keeping their naturalization certificate safe such as by booking refundable tickets for last minute travel and paying for a same day passport.

If you are close to a passport office this works.. feels like gaming the system a bit though as appointments are increasingly hard to get and it means someone with a more urgent need may not get an appt   My closest office i 6 hrs drive away

It’s unfair for sure.  Whether it is more unfair than losing a critical document that was sent with mail that wasn’t certified and tracked is an interesting debate where I suspect there will be wide and irreconcilable disagreement. Travel is nice but getting service from DMV and SSA is essential.

Yep. I do understand. I agree that not having the naturalization certificate out of my possession was good. SSA were happy with the passport as evidence. DMV in MO isnt interested in changing my status until i renew my licence.  Pre N400.. in 2020 .. I had to mail my GC to SSA in order to meet requirements for  Medicare and SSA benefits .. that was before SSA made the direction that GC must not be requested to be mailed.. and way before the offices reopened for in person appts. I sure had a long 10 day wait for it to be returned. I got both the passport card and book so I have an extra ID document    When I sent my GC  to SSA, I sent it certified and enclosed a prepaid certified envelope for them to use to return it to me

I received by Passport a couple of weeks ago, but still haven't received my NC back. This thread has helped me to relax a little, just knowing that many people wait up to 2 months.
