Don't worry. This process can get very confusing, we can all sympathize!

AOS stands for "Adjustment of Status". Basically what that means is that as a K1 or K3 visa holder, once you have entered the U.S. you must adjust your immigration status to become a conditional permanent resident (2 year green card). You can read more about adjusting status from a K3 visa in the Guides section.

This process and its jargon can be so very confusing !!

AOS is commonly used to mean Adjustment Of Status. But it's also the abbreviation for Affidavit Of Support, otherwise known as the I-865 (for CR-1/IR-1 folks) and the I-134 (for K-1/K-3-ers.)

I'm not sure which context you meant... but ask away ! You're certainly not the only one with questions about this maze they call the immigration process.... but you'll find answers to almost everything from the good people here.

Thanks! Ok now what does NOA1, EAD, and RFE mean? :blush:

NOA1 - Notice of Action. The NOA1 is the notice of the receipt of your petition, merely confirming that the petition arrived at the service center.

NOA2 - Notice of Action. The NOA2 is the notice of approval of the petition.

RFE - Request for further evidence. Sometime in between your NOA1 and NOA2, you may receive an RFE, requesting additional or missing information/documents for your petition.

EAD - Employment Authorization Document. You can apply for your EAD once you arrive in the U.S. You'll need an EAD to work in the U.S. until you get your green card.

NOA1 is the first Notice of Action meaning they have your information.

EAD Employment Authorization Document.....needed to work legally in the US

RFE ohhh you don't want this, we had 2 of them. It means they are Requesting Further Evidence, usually something missing from the application.

If you are married more than 2 years at the AOS interview, he will get a 10 year green card, not a 2 year card. If you get a 2 year card, you need to file I751 Lifting of Conditions after 1 year 9 months of arriving.

Keep the questions coming, I finally feel I can help someone after having been thru all this.

NOA = Notice Of Action. You get # 1 when they "officially" receive your I-130, and #2 when they approve your case.

EAD = Employment Authorization Document

RFE = the dreaded Request for Further Evidence

There's an excellent guide at this site, pinned to the top of the K-3 forum that you should read through, if you haven't already. It will be immense help to you in explaining the process.
