Of course you can bring any car to the US. Some of them will require little bit of work. I know people who were doing it for a living. Buying cars around the Europe, and actually sending them off to US from the port in Netherlands.

Also, I see in the area Skoda Octavia (by look 2010-2015 model). That is pretty rare car in Virginia.

As for the tax, there should be some law that you don't pay the tax or it's just something nominal. You need to search for it.

I know that if I wanted to take my car to Europe (while moving there as a resident) I wouldn't have to pay the tax there. I guess there is something similar for people from EU moving to US. Search for it.

Nope,

shipped my Miata to and from Africa for a road rally out of Jacksonville Florida

when it came back the US customs hit me with import tax because Japan ships some Mazda's thru Panama to Jacksonville and customs thought i had purchased it outside the US

I had to return to TN ,  get the paperwork showing i bought it here and go back to Fl to get my car out of holding and then they still charged me a fee for storage

BTW i even had the paperwork showing i had shipped it to Africa and they wouldn't even look at it (much like a CO when we take paperwork for an interview)

OP to help u decide look at the cost of converting the exhaust including a new catalytic for that year as that is what is needed as BMW did not change out to the new emissions until after 2019

Try Bimmerworld for prices BMW prices

Dear people of VJ,

I own a 2015 BMW M135i xDrive with about 80k miles on it. It's quite a rare one (3 door, red leather interior, full options, and it was a BMW press vehicle). I absolutely adore it and would love to take it to the U.S. However, given current container prices and potential costs of import etc., I'm wondering if it's even close to worth it.

Does anyone here have any experience with taking their car from Europe to the U.S. for immigration? Additionally, anyone taking a considerable amount of household goods by sea freight who can share experiences?

Cheers,

T

Im a import specialist & clear International cargo every darn day for 30 years.

Firstly, if that auto was not built to EPA and DOT regulations of the US, leave it in France.  US Customs will not clear the auto. It will be put into General Order= customs storage, then after 6 months auctioned off for export only.

Feel free to PM me.

I also use to clear the incoming BMW's bought by US Service men & gals returning to the US on PCS orders

Also shipping rates are outrageous that is if you can get a booking.   a 20' container alone is running lowest  $20,000 to ship now a days, due to shortages of containers, chassis and truckers also.

My clients are paying more for shipping now a days then what their  product is valued at, and that cause them to raise their prices.

Hi @OfficialGreenT,

i moved my rather small household last year from Germany to the US successfully but the price was pretty high and it also changed every month due to the instabil sea freight rates, Covid, international container shortage, truck shortage in the US etc.
I decided to take my stuff with me because of emotional reasons but if you don’t have anything like that or only a few items I’d rather recommend you to think about it twice if it’s worth you all the money and nerves to go through this adventure.
If you need more details from me I’ll gladly help you with my experience, just send me a message.
Btw I also sent four bigger cardboard boxes with DHL including some last minute stuff of mine - 3 of them arrived more or less safe and sound and one got completely lost (for which DHL reimbursed me but still, the emotional value can never be paid). Just keep this in mind if someone is recommending you to use any courier service for shipping your stuff overseas.

I agree with the others that it is not worth it.  And you will not be able to drive it like you did in Germany.

I shipped my brand new US origin Honda Accord Hybrid to Germany in 2006.  My move was paid for by my employer, and the shipping company included the car for free, so I got lucky.  I had to pay a few hundred Euro for a guy to certify the car and TUV, etc.  My employer would not pay to move the car.  When I returned to the U.S., the mover charged me $700 to put the car in the 40 ft container with my household goods.

Now I am a similar boat as you.  I want to move my household goods from the Philippines to the US.  In 2020 I was quoted 8-10k usd.  Now it is at least 30k, so we are delaying our move.

I bought a US origin 2007 Corvette in Germany and had a lot of fun with it.  I sold it before I left.  When I got back to the U.S. I bought a 2008 Corvette.  It was nice but the thrill of German driving was gone.
