Telephone Company

I have the worst trouble getting my telephone company to listen to me. There is some kind of technical problem with them that won't let alot of people dial out to their internet providers. We get a busy singal instead of the normal modem sounds. This only happens on phones that have lines from my telephone company. Any others work perfectly fine. Even the customer representative had that problem. They said it was fine and they'd fix the problem by the end of the day.

Well this morning I woke up with the same problem, so I called and apparently there is no history of anyone ever having problems dialing out to their Internet, including me. Now they won't listen to me and have scheduled a technician to come to my house tomorrow and repair my phone. So apparently there is a problem at my house that made every phone line in the county not be able to connect to the Internet.

I just get so mad when companies refuse to listen to anything you have to say. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Sorry, just my rant for the day:D

I finally had enough of Ma Bell. I broke all ties with them 2 years ago. I got cable internet and a Vonage phone. It turned out to be much cheaper and I have blazing internet speed to boot! Landlines are so 20th century.

I agree, though many cable providers are also monopolies (at least in TX) so it's not a huge amount better; once those lines deteriorate it'll be just as bad.

I work for a telephone company and what they are probably getting is a huge amount of traffic going to that one switch. IF that is the case, they need augment the equipment handling all those calls but that would take between 2-4 weeks to do if everything goes right. They can also try to route the calls to a different equipment and see if that helps out a bit.

The thing with phone companies is that the records are beyond screwed up and on top of that a lot of time we don't have the necessary resources to fix issues like yours in an instant. With all the mess I get to see every day, it's a miracle we don't have more problems.

I have Insight cable here. For 2 years they have been totally reliable with no more than a few hours of downtime in 2 years. Fortunately the cable system in Peoria is still pretty new so I have no ambition to change. And I LOVE 10mbit download speeds! :D

My phone company has a monopoly in my area. We live out in the country and they are the only ones with lines. I don't have cable, but if it's available in my area I might look into getting it. I'm FED UP with Verizon. Vonage looks really good.

Now I have to wait until tomorrow for the repair guy to say "Uh oh, the problem isn't here, we'll have to wait until Monday..." and I'll say "No duh"

I found cable to be more reliable than DSL but also more expensive. We've had DSL here for a week and I haven't had one instant of down time. The UK was another story; our phone lines there were degraded and BT refused to fix them; we were having trouble with dropped calls. They wouldn't give us DSL because of the condition of *their* phone lines but Pipex would. Our DSL was down about 25% of the time.

Out of interest HA whenyou refer to dropped calls are you talking about telephony or Broadband connections?

If the problems are telephony they would ask you to carry out some simple test ( diagrams available in the telephone book)

If you refer to Broadband drop out then Pipex would have to discuss the problem with there Broadband provider ( a company called BT Wholesale)

sorry - to add to my above post ( because i dont know if it is telephony issue) - if your reporting telephone fault and after checking you still have a problem - they will despatch and engineer to deal with the telephony problems - it is worth knowing that a problem with telephony can affect your Broadband connection - so....the diagnostic checks are a good way to discover which path to take next.

RIGHT!!!! I think my cable internet costs way too much, but I don't see putting in a land line for just internet access either. (I'm in Texas too by the way)

I got cable internet and a Vonage phone.

So, how's that Vonage phone working for you? I was thinking about ditching my landline in favor of a Vonage phone. Is it working well?

I only had one problem so far. The router died on me about a year ago. I called them and after the usuall "try turning it off and on ect... stuff they agreed that it was bad. They sent me a new one and I had it in my hands 3 days later. Other than that I have been very happy with it. The sound quality is great and it has all the features that cost extra on a regular phone. One thing to remember is that it depends on your internet to work. If that quits, your phone quits.
