He will need to apply for a replacement card.  The downloadable forms are on USCIS.gov.

Hello!

I am sorry that your friend is going through this. Sadly, if he doesn’t have any copy or documentation of his green card, they need to apply for a replacement green card by filling out the I-90 form and paying the replacement fee. The fee is not cheap and it does take about 6 months.

He needs a copy of his green card to file the N-400.  No way around this requirement.

He needs to contact USCIS and file for a replacement green card.  This will slow down his timeline to file the N-400.

Thank you for the info one thing i do Find weird is that when i had my n-400 interview and oath ceremony there was ppl without their green card to return to uscis. Im guessing its all based on luck & who your IO is. My GC had been expired for over 5 years at the time of my interview and nobody mentioned it or nor it was a problem. Also on the oath ceremony questionnaire on the very top there is a question were you could check mark wether you have your CG or not. But thank you got the quick response.

If they had a combo interview (I751 & N400 at the same time), it's possible they could approve both at the same time. In those cases they often don't issue a greencard.

This is a good finding share. Thank you @Adujarric .
I do have my valid GC with me, attending interview for N400 in few days. I want to keep my GC as a memory(I know USCIS takes it at Oath and destroys it later). What are my options? Can I keep my GC in my car and mark the form as I dont have my GC? OR can I check it and request the officer to return my GC(may be they can puncture it OR cut it in the corner etc to invalidate it)? What is the right thing to do? Thanks

To be honest i my self was kinda of happy getting rid of my GC. It was a feeling of freedom knowing that i no longer needed a green card as proof of my status in this country.

Yeah that right, but it can stick into some card holder at the corner to remind the struggle that we took for years. Anyways 🙂 Let me find out if I can keep it 🙂 Thank you for your quick attention on my above question.

Are you serious? RETURN IT. That is a whole lot of trouble you're trying to get into for a memento. Do not intentionally lie on government forms no matter how insignificant it may seem.

Yes, I agree with you now. When I was posting, I was under impression that they simply shred it off like an old plastic credit card. But as you said, it may be much beyond that, I have returned it already. So, I am good. Thanks for that strong suggestion, its worth it.
