SSN and What I-94?

Okay this is getting a little more than frustrating to figure out. Had no idea my fiance was eligible for a SSN immediately or we would have done that. Anyway what is this I-94? We absolutely did NOT receive one when entering the country and CBP website just says no record found. The border guy just stamped her and her daughters(K2) passports and threw all the paperwork in the trash.

How do we go about getting the SSN now that we're married? I realize on the AOS paperwork there is a part that says to have SSN issued however for insurance we need it ASAP. Can somebody tell us how we can do this quickly or what exactly we must do now? We got married within the 90 days and now are just past it.

Thanks

You do not need a SSN for insurance.  Escalate up the chain if needed.  Now that you are married, you will, likely, have to wait until receipt of an EAD to get a SSN.

I-94s are electronic.

I-94 is a departure/arrival record, everyone who enters the US has that automatically. It used to be a paper form many years ago but now it’s electronic and you can find it here:

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

Unfortunately, you cannot apply for SSN until she receives either an EAD or green card. You have to apply for SSN before day 75 of the 90 days and you’re way past that. I second that SSN is not required to be added on spouses insurance but many insurance or HR people are clueless to that.

Okay thanks for the reply. It's strange I can't even obtain the digital copy. Their website just says no record found. I do need this I-94 to apply for adjustment of status though?

I'm surprised you never came across this piece of crucial advice in your year here on VJ.  It is said again and again that the first thing to do after stepping off the plane is to apply for an SSN.

Well I'm kicking myself now. Guess I just never noticed that part. I assumed that was something that couldn't happen until after you're married.

Focus on the Insurance, that will have a time limit from when you married.

Try all versions of the given name in the given name entry box.

1. First name by itself.

2. Middle name by itself.

3. First plus middle name.

4. Middle plus first.

If that doesn't work, contact your nearest CBP deffered inspection site by phone (you can Google exactly that and find yours).

It happens.  Whatever you do, don't let your employer insist that your spouse cannot be covered on insurance without the SSN, because that is widely misunderstood in the world of HR.

I added my husband to my workplace insurance before he had his SSN, without a problem.  They simply put 000-00-0000, and amend it with the actual number later on.  It does not impact claims or coverage, as his name and DOB are adequate temporary identifiers.

If you do not have a I-94 record in the system, everyone will have to go to your nearest CBP office with everyone's passport so they can enter it into the system.

Lots of advise given here, some not very accurate.  If you apply for Social Security before the 1-94 expires you may get a card but it will be issued in the name that appears on the passport.  At least that is what happened to us.  We are now being told that until we receive the Green Card no name change can take place.  Hard to get reliable information from Social Security, I think they are still locked down.

On;y a minority would want to change the name.

Would love to see the data on that.

My wife definitely wanted to change her surname to mine.  I told her to knock herself out and suggested that this was something should be done after she gets a naturalized (not as a part of)

OP if your employer’s heath insurance wants an SSN try 000-00-0000

I am sure there are some men who do, not very many.

May have been common practice in the past but by no means is now for women to change their name.
