I-134 and co-sponsors

I am a poor grad student/adjunct university faculty and need a co-sponsor to bring my fiance over to America. I thought (up until recently) that I'd need to supply the embassy with an I-864, but now see that I need to send them an I-134.

Can my co-sponsor fill out this I-134 (since I only make about $10,000 a year at present)? If need be, I could surely include one of my own as well.

Any thoughts?

Also... Do I send them copies, or the original copies? Will I need these when we apply for permanent residency (for my fiance)?

Max,

Yes, someone other than you can sponsor your fiancee's visa. They should provide an I-134 and other financial documentation.

It would be prudent of you to have your own financial information package available in the event that it is asked for.

Signed documents, such as the I-134 and employer's letter, should be the original document, other documents can be photocopies of the original documents.

You'll send notarized originals for your fiance to present if asked for. When you apply for permanent residency, the I-864 is used, so you'll need new originals. The supporting documentation can be copies.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
