I'm not sure if hiring an attorney is the best bet when you have lack of proof of meeting in the last 2 yrs. If you think that having an attorney gives you some sort of priority with the USCIS, you are mistaken. Better to invest the money (that you would spend on an attorney) and go visit your fiance again, take lots of pictures, and keep copies of boarding passes, ticket stubs, and have more proof in your filing. The more proof you have the better.

Humm, A reliable attorney? Gosh, ask something easy next time like an honest politician or a kind mass murderer.

If I was doing my 23rd K-1, from Death row for murdering my first 22 and felt an attorney might make it a little easier I would probably look at Gary Bala as one of the ones who might do the best job at slowing down and complicating a simple process a little less than the other fools who hang out a shingle and pretend they know what they are doing.

12/14/2006 Applied for K-1 with request for Waver for Multiple filings within 2 years.
Waiting - Waiting - Waiting
3/6 Called NVC file sent to Washington for "Administrative Review" Told to call back every few weeks. 7/6 Called NVC, A/R is finished, case on way to Moscow. YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi

My boyfrend and i have decided to go for k1 visa. However,we would like to go thru attorny though our case is pretty straight frward.

Can somebody please suggest a good attorney. My fiance stays in Virginia

Thanks

I can not give you a virginia lawyer, but I would like to encourage you to not use a lawyer.

Unless you have problems in the past (failed immigration, multiple marriages, other strange things) The lawyer will in fact slow you down.

I have even read of a visa officer saying that if some one needs a lawyer, it makes them suspicious.

The forms are easy, the guides here are really good.

You can easily petition yourself.

For K1, the most important thing is proof of relationship. Get proof (pictures, airline tickets, visa, hotel phone records, snail mail, email etc.) and keep the records.

Obviously it is your choice, but I have heard more bad things about lawyers than good things.

The choice of using an attorney is yours of course. VJ is very helpful and you probably can do it yourself but that is up to you. You don't need to use an attorney in your state since everything is mailed anyway. If you choose one, make sure they are well versed in the current laws and that this is a main part of their practice. Many choose to use an attorney just to insure they do it according to the laws. This is why you need to check the attorney's practice first.

I would recommend that you review the procedures here on VJ along with the documents provided. If you feel that you still can't handle it, then there are several attorneys that can be recommended.

There are so many threads on here discussing the lawyer question. Use a google site-specific search or the VJ search engine (which can be tempermental) to find them and read up on the issue.

Best advice: do a TON OF HOMEWORK yourself before you even start looking for lawyer recommendations. How will you know if your attorney is qualified if you don't understand the process yourself?

Find an attorney who has experience in FAMILY BASED immigration. Employment based immigration attorneys are plentiful, but the processes are TOTALLY different and an lawyer good at one thing may be lousy at the other.

Have your fiance contact the Virginia State Bar to ask for qualified immigration lawyers in the area. DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON WEBSITES PROMISING RESULTS. Any lawyer who "guarantees" results should be avoided. That's a generally unethical practice.

Bear in mind as you DO YOUR RESEARCH on both the process and on lawyers that lawyers DO NOT have special access to agencies. They DO NOT have the ability to speed up your case. There are no special phone lines for lawyers. Lawyers aren't magicians, they have no magic powers.

Lawyers can help you tremendously if your case is complicated (past filings, past trouble with immigration law, inadmissibility issues, etc). But an ill-prepared lawyer can also seriously hinder your progress (look up member Kym and read her story for a really soul-wrenching cautionary tale).

Bottom line: the best advice is to learn all you can about the process yourself otherwise you'll never know if your lawyer is really helping you or not. You will always be the person most concerned with your own case's progress, no matter how much you pay someone else to be concerned about it as well.

Seems like a lot a money to pay someone to do clerical work in filling out a few pages of answers, especially when you will still have to do all the leg work and supply all of the information. Any ####### can fill out a petition. If there are no issues, then you wont need an attorney.

A job application is more difficult to fill out than a fiancee petition.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.
